General Dynamics NASSCO-Norfolk is the consolidation of two great shipyards that have operated in the Port of Hampton Roads, Virginia for more than 50 years - the former Metro Machine Corporation and the former Earl Industries.  Along with our facilities in Bremerton, Washington, our expertise encompasses experience on more than 450 ships, a Master Ship Repair Agreement (MSRA) contract, and the maintenance and repair of aircraft carriers and ships from the Navy's amphibious fleet.



  • Must be able to oversee a small group of people as a team
  • Must be proficient in the use of, and have the ability to review all work specification items, drawings, technical manuals , NAVSEA Standard Items or other contract documentation to ensure all test and inspection requirements are identified or captured in the test and inspection plan
  • Must qualify as a Level II Non-Destructive Testing Inspector in the UT-shear wave NDT processes (when assigned).
  • Must be able to generate UT-shear wave NDT reports documenting the results of inspections. (If qualified)
  • Must be able to write, maintain and close out Test and Inspection Plans on a small availability
  • Must be able to recognize the need to modify the Test and Inspection Plan (TIP) based on Request for Contract Change (RCC), Engineering Service Request (ESR), Condition Found Report (CFR) or other work authorizing document
  • Must be able to draft and submit required reports and condition found reports (CFR) as required
  • Must be able to identify Departures from Specification (DFS), and provide all Objective Quality Evidence (OQE) required to draft and submit a DFS for acceptance
  • Must be able to conduct Corrective Action Request (CAR) surveillance for close out
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Must have advanced computer skills with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and must have basic skills with Access Data Base and Project
  • Must have excellent personal skills working with others
  • Must be able to conduct advanced training to J1-J3 ship repair inspectors in the execution of work
  • Must be able to set, self-calibrate and use assigned testing, inspection and QA instruments
  • Must be able to use basic Lean and Six Sigma principles to provide recommended solutions to identified or perceived problems
  • Must be able to perform quality system audits in accordance with contract, NAVSEA, and regulatory body requirements
  • Must be able to set-up and close out jobs, including TIPs, filing for OQE records, checkpoint notifications, etc.
  • Must be able to plan and manage a system for control of non-conforming product and implementing corrective and preventive action
  • Regular on-site attendance required for this position
  • Must be able to gain access to all Local Navy Yards and Ship Yards
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs
