Job Summary

 

Sets up and operates burning equipment to cut metal structural parts and shapes as specified by work orders.  Trims and bevels blocks or units as needed for alignment of clean and ship metals.  Performs other related tasks as assigned, some of which may become essential to the position.

 

Qualification Standards

 

Two years on the job experience is required.  Must have demonstrated knowledge and skill with burning equipment (including torch and automatic machines), bevel square, and measuring tape.  Must have ability to work at heights up to 50-70’ in the sky climber equipment, in confined spaces, and be available to work any shift.  Must be able to access and move around ship safely.  Must have ability to hear warning signals and read and comprehend safety instructions, regulations and warnings.  

 

Essential Job Tasks

 

  • Set up tools, accessories and supplies at job site.
  • Burns and cuts steel to specified fit.
  • Cleans metal.
  • Removes steel scrap.
  • Other jobs duties as may be assigned relevant to the trade.

 

 

Materials, Tools Equipment, Work Aids

 

50 lbs. burning machines, welding leads, hand torch, chipping hammer, tool bag, small pneumatic or electric grinder, cleaning equipment, personal protective equipment, automated burning equipment, and other hand tools as needed.

 

Physical/Mental Involvement

 

Frequent lifting and pulling up to 50 lbs. of equipment. Repetitive or prolonged bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, standing, balancing, walking, climbing ladders or equipment, reaching above shoulder or out in front, manual dexterity, pushing, pulling, seeing, hearing and occasionally lowering self into confined spaces, crawling through small openings and working in reclined positions, as needed. Works in all areas of the shipyard and on board ship.  Hearing warning signals and reading and comprehending safety instructions.  Must be able to maintain general safety awareness and avoid hazards commonly present in employee’s work area.    

 

Marginal Job Tasks

 

General housekeeping required in work areas.  May be required to attend safety, quality, and process improvement meetings.

 

Environmental Factors

 

Exposure to fumes, odors, dust, and gases, various climates and temperatures, and low ventilation conditions, all of which can cause discomfort and/or respiratory difficulties.  Exposure to constantly moving machines and mechanical parts and high levels of constant noise.
