Student Electrician

Responsible for all phases of construction. Student position encompasses 8 to 10 weeks of hands on training in specified trade. Students will learn installs, repairs and hooks up equipment for all electrical services on the ship.  Lays out, pulls, lifts out and installs cable and conduit.  Prepares work area, drills holes and grinds metal surfaces, and welds mounting equipment.  Tests electrical equipment. 

Actively participates in implementing and monitoring continuous improvement initiatives to improve safety, improve quality, reduce cycle time, and reduce costs.

 

Required Education/Training

High school education/equivalent preferred. Successful completion of NASSCO training program. Students will learn to use power and hand tools and read composite blueprints, computer printouts, and Navy standards manuals required.   Must have ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and be available to work any shift.  Must comprehend written and verbal instructions and hear warning signals, read and comprehend safety instructions, regulations and warnings.

 

Experience (type and preferred # of years)

 

• Excellent eye hand coordination •Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. frequently • Ability to climb ladders and work at heights •Able to work in confined spaces • Ability to work independently with little supervision • Must have problem solving skills • Must have a good understanding of math and measurements • Must have 20/20 OR correctable vision • Must be able to demonstrate flexibility and versatility with respect to work tasks • Must possess observation skills, ability to respond quickly, good judgment and on-going safety awareness • Ability to understand verbal and written instructions and to communicate effectively (in English) required.

 

Unique/Additional Requirements

Must be able to work all shifts and at heights. Must show at least two years of continuous, stable and verifiable employment. May consider NASSCO approved training program. Construction or manufacturing background preferred and have strong mechanical skills. Frequent carrying, pushing, pulling, standing, manual dexterity, reaching, seeing, hearing, occasional kneeling, reclining and finger dexterity. Maintain safety awareness and ability to follow directions.
