- ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES
With minimum supervision, the Hot Work Coordinator should be able to provide Fire prevention guidance and support to the workforce, while ensuring that the Company maintains compliance with all applicable Federal, State and local regulations.
- POSITION DEMANDS (Education/Training)
Typically has a High School Diploma and at least two (2) years of experience performing environmental health and safety (EHS), or fire prevention inspections duties. Desired experience in hot work.

- Extensive knowledge of ship repair or other manufacturing operations, facilities, processes and operating procedures to understand the impact that Federal, State and Local EHS regulations.
- Knowledgeable of:
- Ship configuration, ship repair techniques and operations.
- Safe operation of tools and machinery.
- Knowledge and experience with fire prevention and identifying hazards.
- Conduct daily surveillances of assigned areas ensuring that all operations (including those of Sub-Contractors) are in compliance with Federal, State and local regulations and NASSCO HS/fire prevention policies and procedures; identify EHS/fire prevention hazards or deficiencies and initiates corrective action through production supervision.
- Prepare written reports on surveillances.
- Review current literature and trade publications in order to remain current regarding all OSHA and other applicable HS standards and regulations.
- Establish a close working relationship and communicate with department/ship manager on a regular basis.
- Able to identify/locate various compartments on board vessels.
- Must be able to gain access to government facilities.
- Must have current driver's license.
- Must have the ability to communicate effectively, in English, in both oral and written applications in order to successfully interact with management and employees.

- WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
Reports to the Ship Manager. Maintains internal contacts with Production, Repair, Maintenance, Medical, and Emergency Response personnel.
- PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Receive, review, and coordinate each hot work authorization form submitted.
- Complete Attachment C of NSI 009-08, Hot Work Notification Log for each approved hot work authorization form and sign after verifying with Hot Work Supervision that hot work is ready to commence and after hot work has ended. Each signature affirms requested hot work authorization will be worked each shift and that the hot work has ended.
- Meet daily, when hot work is scheduled with each designated representative from each RA, the Commanding Officer's designated representative, and the Supervisor to eliminate each hot work conflict, and to advise the Supervisor of each hot work problem that could impact the RA's or any ship's work operation.
- Participate in each Fire Safety Council (FSC) meeting, when needed, to support adjudicating each request
for deviation.
- Ensure that each RA (Repair Activity) submits a properly filled out hot work authorization form.
- Submit each hot work authorization form to the Commanding Officer's designated representative responsible for maintaining Attachment “C” at a location agreed upon by the FSC.
- Ensure each hot work authorization form revision submitted by the cognizant RA is processed prior to proceeding with the work necessitating the revision to the hot work authorization form.
- Prioritize allocation of hot work authorization forms each shift, based on the integrated production schedule.
- Conducts shipboard fire prevention (including fire prevention equipment) and hot work surveillances on Company contracted vessels daily, or as required.
- Identify the job-specific hazards hot work workers may be subjected to in the course of their duties and provide the appropriate guidance to mitigate those hazards.
- Determine site-specific flammable materials, hazardous processes, or other potential fire hazards present or likely to be present in the work location.
- Attend meetings, as required by the Manager.
- Makes status reports, as required daily/weekly, as defined by the Manager.
- ACCOUNTABILITY
With minimum supervision, Hot Work Coordinator is responsible for ensuring that all hot work policies and practices are followed. This position assists with implementing, monitoring and reviewing the protective and preventative measures that companies are required or choose to follow, and work to prevent fires. Carrying out daily hot work surveillances to check that policies and procedures are being properly implemented.
- UNIQUE/ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to access all work locations, including government and private ship yards and/or vessels.
- While performing the duties of this position, the employee must be able to enter confined spaces through temporary access openings, man hole covers, water tight hatches and doors. Work at heights in confining or restricted spaces aboard vessels under construction/repair.
- Daily inspections require entering confined spaces, climbing ladders, working at heights, walking on scaffolding, observing use of tools and operation of equipment/machinery.
- Physical dexterity must allow for bending, reaching, climbing, crawling, and working on ladders and scaffolding.
- Must be physically able to walk to all yard locations, handle stressful situations, and be able to lift up to 50 pounds of weight.
- Visual abilities required include close, distance and peripheral vision, depth perception and color recognition.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to vapors, gases, dust, welding/burning fumes, and smoke.
- Must be able to spend up to 90% of time in an outdoor shipyard environment in all climates.
- The noise level is usually moderate to extremely noisy 90% of the time, which may include sirens, horns, chipping, and hammering.
- Maintain regular, reliable attendance.
- May be required to travel to Everett for company business.
Pay Range: $22.78 - $29.89 per hour
The pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity. At NASSCO Bremerton we anticipate making salary offers between the minimum and midpoint of salary range. Offers will be based on experience, abilities, and knowledge similar to the NASSCO Job being applied for NASSCO employees performing similar work.
