ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSE (Job Description)
The Machinist are responsible for accomplishing work in accordance with work specifications safely, with the highest quality and in a professional manner. Outside machinists are to perform work onboard US Navy vessels with portable tools to install equipment such as pumps, motors, generators, turbines, hoist, top side deck equipment and other mechanical machinery reporting directly to supervisor or work leader.
POSITION DEMANDS (Education/Training)
- Must have 5 years of experience as a Shipyard Outside Machinist
- Must have a minimum of basic tools sizes ranging from ¼” to 1 ¼”
- Understand shipboard and industrial safety requirements
- Have basic knowledge of NAVSEA standard items
POSITION DEMANDS (Required Experience)
- Ability to use process control procedures and controlled work packages
- Ability to measure flanges for correct blanks and hardware sizes
- Ability to differentiate between the different type and grades of hardware
- Remove and install valves using proper fasteners, gaskets, and torque procedures
- Use hand tools, torque wrenches, gages, potable machines, grinders, drills and power tools to perform work.
- Must be able to read blueprints and drawings
- Must demonstrate the knowledge of using inside/outside micrometers
- Perform pump and motor alignments
- Perform jobsite inspections prior to starting work noting all conditions found throughout the space and submit condition reports to supervisor
- Perform component and system testing in accordance with drawings, notes, technical manuals, and specifications.
- Assist other trades with installations of piping, foundations and components for mounting/installations of shipboard equipment and systems.
- Other responsibilities and duties as assigned.
- Regular reliable onsite attendance.

Vision Requirements:
The worker is required to have visual acuity to perform an activity such as: operating machines where the seeing job is at or within arm’s reach or performing mechanical or skilled trades tasks of a non-repetitive nature such as ones by electricians, technicians, service people, painters, mechanics, etc.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
This position reports to the supervisor/foreman. This position develops and maintains a positive working relationship with other Pipefitters and supports a team approach in the pursuit of common company goals.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ability to identify parts, read tech manuals, spec items and blueprints.
- Ability to use and understand precision measuring instrument
- Have experience in machinery overhaul and installation and testing of all the following:
- Winches (Electric driven, Electro Hydraulic)
- Anchor Windless
- Steering Gear
- Air Compressors
- Pump and motor alignments
- Valve Repairs
- Diesel Engine Repairs
- Hydraulic Trouble shooting, repairs
- Reduction gear repairs
- Generator repairs
- Boat davit repairs
- Bearing fit-up & installation
- Gas turbine repairs
- Have Propulsion experience of the following:
- Shafting repairs and alignment, fixed and controllable pitch
- Propellers removed and installed
- Rudders repair and installed
- Tool Operation Requirements:
- Operator grinder, fixed and portable
- Operate drill presses, fixed and portable
- Fixed Presses
- Porta powers
- Hydraulic jacks
- Torches and Torque Wrenches
- Regular, reliable attendance on-site is an essential function of the job.

Regular, reliable attendance on-site is an essential function of the job. Weekend work and/or extended hours may be required Must be able to access all work locations, including government and private shipyards and/or vessels. While performing the duties of this position, the employee must be able to enter confined spaces, work at heights and in confining or restricted spaces aboard vessels under construction/repair. Physical dexterity must allow for bending, reaching, climbing, and working on ladders and scaffolding. Must be physically able to walk to all yard locations. Must be able to handle stressful situations. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds of weight. Visual abilities required include close, distance and peripheral vision, depth perception and color recognition. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to vapors, gases, dust, welding/burning fumes, and smoke. Must be able to spend up to 90% of time in an outdoor shipyard environment in all climates. The noise level is usually moderate to extremely noisy 90% of the time, which may include sirens, horns, chipping, and hammering.
Pay Range: $26.56 - $34.38 per hour
The pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity.
