ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSE (Job Description)
The Rigger 2nd Class is responsible for accomplishing work in accordance with work specifications safely, with the highest quality, in a professional manner. As a 2nd Class Rigger in the maritime industry, you will play a crucial role in the safe and efficient operation of lifting and rigging activities onboard naval vessels, or in shipyards.
POSITION DEMANDS (Education/Training/Experience)
- Must have a minimum High School diploma or equivalent and two (2) years directly related experience as a Rigger, preferably in the maritime industry.
- Knowledge of rigging principles, techniques and best practices.
- Ability to read and interpret drawings, blueprints, and rigging plans.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
- Physical strength and stamina to lift heavy objects and work in challenging environments.
- Certification in rigging (e.g., NCCER Rigger Certification) is a plus.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- General knowledge of inspecting slings, wire rope and chain falls.
- Understands the importance of jobsite cleanliness and potential hazards.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills in order to coordinate with team members.
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve rigging-related issues effectively.
- Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – including a respirator (as needed).
- Operate hand and power tools effectively with other trades to ensure safe and efficient lifting evolutions.
- Perform rigging tasks such as lifting, moving and securing heavy equipment and materials using ropes, cable slings, chain falls and other rigging equipment.
- Must be able to climb ladders and work in tight areas.
- Ability to obtain knowledge of knot tying with the capabilities of tying knots and knowing their uses and functionalities such as bowlines, square knots and hitches, etc

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
This position works under the supervision of a Lead Rigger or Foreman. This position develops and maintains a positive working relationship with other trades and supports a team approach in the pursuit of common company goals.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Safely move heavy equipment/material throughout the ship.
- Ability to obtain a NASSCO Bremerton forklift license up to 20 Ton.
- Rig to assemble/dismantle ships equipment.
- Hoist equipment using cranes, chain falls and pulleys according to NAVSEA standards.
- Inspect rigging equipment, including slings, shackles, synthetic slings, cables, and hooks, ensuring good, safe working condition.
- Calculate load weights and select appropriate rigging gear based on the weight, size and shape of the load to be lifted.
- Secures loads using rigging techniques such as ropes, chokers, slings, shackles, spreader bars and taglines to prevent shifting or damaging during lifting operations.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, including proper storage of rigging equipment and materials.
- Follow safety procedures and protocols to minimize risks related to rigging evolutions, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Inspect, measure and record data of ships equipment for certification.
- Assist weight tests of ships equipment.
- Willing to work at heights and/or over water.
- Assist with loading and unloading cargo, equipment and material from trucks.
- Work closely with other crew members, including rigging leaders, crane operators and dockworkers, to coordinate rigging activities.
- Ability to adapt to change in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to navigate around and onboard Naval vessels.
- Maintain accurate records of rigging operations, inspections and maintenance activities.
ACCOUNTABILITY
Works under the supervision of a Lead Rigger or Rigging Foreman.
UNIQUE/ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Evening, weekend and/or extended hours may be required, as needed.
- Work may be performed indoors or outdoors, in all weather conditions.
- May require working at heights (20ft. or higher) and/or confined spaces.
Pay Range: $24.03 - $31.54 per hour
The pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity. At NASSCO Bremerton we anticipate making salary offers between the minimum and midpoint of salary range. Offers will be based on experience, abilities, and knowledge similar to the NASSCO Job being applied for NASSCO employees performing similar work.
