- ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSE (Job Description)
Insulators are responsible for accomplishing work in accordance with work specifications safely, with the highest quality, in a professional manner. Regular, reliable attendance on-site is an essential function of the position.
- POSITION DEMANDS (Education/Training)
Typically has a High School diploma or equivalent plus five (5) years directly related experience.
POSITION DEMANDS (Required Experience)
- Must have at least 5 years’ experience working on ships
- Must have full knowledge of WAF’s
- Must be able to complete work with little guidance from Supervisor.
- Must have basic knowledge of Standard Items
- Must have basic knowledge of shop equipment
- Works well with others

- VISUAL REQUIREMENTS
Required to have visual acuity to perform an activity such as: operating machines where the seeing job is at or within arm’s reach or performing mechanical or skilled trades’ tasks of a non-repetitive nature such as ones by electricians, technicians, service people, painters, mechanics, etc.
- WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
Reports to the Paint Shop Foreman / General Foreman.
- PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Installs pre-formed pipe covering on various piping systems
- Performs layout and installation of bulkhead, overhead and ventilation ducting insulation
- Take measurements and fabricates portable pads for various valves, fitting and tanks.
- Able to apply final coating (mastic, cement, etc.) to insulating materials to provide finished product
- Installs sheet insulation boards to bulkheads and overheads after preliminary preparation has been accomplished, such as layout and positioning of studs.
- Removes existing insulation from machinery, piping systems, boilers and bulkheads and overhead of compartments, heating and air conditioning systems.
- Capable of using basic hand tools of trade (pliers, saw, snips, etc.)
- Able to read standard measuring tape and/or ruler
- Should be familiar with ship board nomenclature (getting to and from job sites)
- ACCOUNTABILITY
Accountable to the Paint Shop Foreman / General Foreman

- UNIQUE/ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to access all Navy installations and other shipyards. Must have reliable transportation. Must be able to work aboard vessels, climb ladders, and work in tanks and confined spaces. Must be able to wear personal protective equipment. Must be able to work evening and weekend hours. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds of weight. Must possess or be able to promptly obtain a valid passport. May require up to 30% travel to include international.
