The Welders are responsible for accomplishing work in accordance with work specifications safely, with the highest quality and in a professional manner. Regular, reliable attendance on-site is an essential function of the job.
- Welding on a wide variety of materials, using an ever-growing number of welding processes.
- Welding structural assemblies using GMAW and SMAW processes
- Use of tools such as grinders, burr tools, wire brushes, etc.
- Oxy/fuel pre-heat and carbon/arc gouging as well as verifying weld size using weld gauges
- Reading and interpretation of weld symbols, technique sheets, and work packages
- Additional tasks as assigned
This position will require travel between Kings Bay, GA and Jacksonville
POSITION DEMANDS (Education/Training/Experience)
Required:
- Must have dependable transportation.
- Ability to gain access to local bases.
- Standard tools for a welder.
- Able to work different shifts.
- Must have good knowledge of ship board spaces.
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
- Must be able to follow instructions and work well with others.
- Basic knowledge of weld power source.
- 5 years of on-the-job welding experience
- Familiarity with manual and/or semi-automatic welding processes
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Available to work all shifts
- Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces and in extreme temperature conditions as required
- Ability to pass required weld tests under NAVSEA 248
- Ability to gain access to Government and Commercial facilities
Preferred:
- Vocational, Technical and Community Colleges or Apprentice programs, Military Shipbuilding, and manufacturing experience
- Ability to interpret welding and shipyard procedures, structural drawings, technical manuals, test documents and diagrams
- Basic mathematical skills

Visual Requirements: Must be able to pass a Standard Jaeger’s Test chart for near vision acuity reading J1 letters or equivalent with or without corrective aids and pass a vision test using Ishihara’s Tests.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
This position reports to shop supervisor. This position develops and maintains a positive working relationship with other Welders and supports a team approach in the pursuit of common company goals.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assures that tank/compartment has an updated safe for hot work ticket and that requirements of the ticket have been met. (Example: ventilation, lighting, safety equipment etc.).
- Assures that conditions of the tank/compartment have not changed since the ticket was written. (Example: fuel run back, unsafe working conditions, etc.).
- Assures that a Work Authorization Form (WAF) ticket is on the job site and that it is for the specific job being accomplished, no work will be accomplished without a WAF posted at location of repairs.
- Assures that any other safety issues are complied with that relate to the specific job being accomplished (Example: special staging, face shields for grinding, protective clothing for hot work related jobs, breathing apparatus with correct cartridges, etc).
- Assures that you are trained or qualified for the work you are assigned to do (Example: JLG, forklift, welding, brazing, special electrical/mechanical repairs and etc.).
- Assures that General Dynamics-NASSCO’s Safety Procedures, including testing, are utilized for all torch work.
- Assures that you and personnel working under your direction are working as safely and as productively as possible maintaining quality control at all times.
- Assures that a 30 minute cool down period has been accomplished in hot work areas.
- Assures that fire watches are assigned and maintained in the proper position.
- Assures that the job site is left in a safe and clean condition prior to departure.
- Assures that personnel have work package and the necessary drawings, technical manuals, or specifications required for them to adequately accomplish their work assignments.
- ACCOUNTABILITY
Responsible for effective, efficient and safe accomplishment of all assigned tasks.
- UNIQUE/ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be willing to travel and have reliable transportation.
- Must be a U.S. citizen
- Must have reliable record of attendance and punctuality and be available for overtime as required.
- Must be able to physically transit all areas of the facility.
- Regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects or controls, and to talk and hear.
- Must have good eye/hand coordination.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
- Must be familiar with working in a naval-ship-work-environment and be able to go aboard marine vessels
- These areas can be dirty, dusty, hot or cold, and noisy.
- Must have or soon acquire a valid passport.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds of weight.
- May require travel up to 30%
