General Dynamics NASSCO-Norfolk is the consolidation of two great shipyards that have operated in the Port of Hampton Roads, Virginia for more than 50 years - the former Metro Machine Corporation and the former Earl Industries.  Along with our facilities in Bremerton, Washington, our expertise encompasses experience on more than 450 ships, a Master Ship Repair Agreement (MSRA) contract, and the maintenance and repair of aircraft carriers and ships from the Navy's amphibious fleet.

  1. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSE (Job Description)
     
    The Diesel Mechanic J4 is responsible for accomplishing work in accordance with work specifications, safety, with the highest quality, in a professional manner.  Regular, reliable attendance on-site is an essential function of the job.
     
  2. POSITION DEMANDS (Education/Training)
                       
    1. Must meet all Journeyman Diesel Mechanic 3 requirements
    2. Must be able to oversee a small group of people and lead the job from start to finish via work specification and EPCP/PCP/CWP
    3. Must have the ability to plan, organize and prioritize well and handle problems and concerns without assistance
    4. Proficient with the requirements of the process and the equipment used
    5. Proficient with the requirements of the applicable OSHA and NAVSEA Standard Items
    6. Must know how to set up a job and correspond with other shops
    7. Must be able to replace, repair and test diesel engine components
    8. Must be able to execute a specification item with no supervision
    9. Must be able to use dial indicator and perform alignment checks
    10. Able to perform checkpoints with minimal supervision

  1. VISUAL REQUIREMENTS
     

    Required to have visual acuity to perform an activity such as: operating machines where the job is at or within arm’s reach or performing mechanical or skilled trades’ tasks of a non-repetitive nature such as ones by electricians, technicians, service people, painters, mechanics, etc.

     

    Must be able to climb on and around ships and walk to other yard areas and requires extended periods of standing and walking (75%). Inspections and work may require climbing ladders, working at heights, walking on scaffolding and observing co-workers using tools and equipment. Lifting/carrying tools and parts weighing up to 50 lbs. on frequent basis.  Standing, bending, sitting, reaching, pushing, pulling, crouching, kneeling, handling, finger dexterity, feeling, eye/hand/foot coordination, seeing, hearing required. Selecting appropriate tools for jobs, as per trade classification. Works in tight, confined work spaces on board ship and is exposed to varied temperatures, wind, wet and humid conditions, fumes, odors and dust, vibrations from ship and hand tools.

     
  2. WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
     
    Reports to the Sheetmetal Shop Foreman / General Foreman. 
     
  3. PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Assists in assembly of diesel engines and components in accordance with drawings, specifications and meet Navy standard requirements, with minimum supervision
  2. Ensure that WAF ticket is on the job site and that it is for the specific job being accomplished.  Must ensure that no work will be accomplished without a WAF posted at location of repairs.
  3. Ensure that any other safety issues are complied with that relate to the specific job being accomplished (ex., special staging, face shields for grinding, protective clothing for hot work related jobs, breathing apparatus with correct cartridges, etc.)
  4. Ensure that you are trained for qualified for the work you are assigned to do (ex., JLG, forklift, welding, brazing, special electrical/mechanical repairs, etc.)
  5. Ensure that you and personnel working under your direction are working safely and as productively as possible, maintaining quality control at all times
  6. Ensure that job site is left in a safe and clean condition prior to departure
  7. Ability to complete assignment with minimum direction of supervision.

  3. UNIQUE/ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
     

    Must be able to access all Navy installations and other shipyards.  Must have reliable transportation.  Must be able to work aboard vessels, climb ladders, and work in tanks and confined spaces.  Must be able to wear personal protective equipment.  Must be able to work evening and weekend hours.  Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds of weight.

     

    May require up to 30% travel.
