We currently have an exciting opportunity in our Environmental department. This position specifically is located in Norfolk, Virginia. We are looking for an EHS Coordinator.

 

Shift : 0600 - 1545

Security Clearance: No Clearance

  1. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSE

 

The EHS Coordinator is responsible for promoting environmental, health, and safety stewardship throughout the company while leading and guiding the activities of 5S Laborers in their responsibilities and assignments.  They provide EHS guidance, supervision and support to the workforce and their team.  They lead, guide, and coordinate 5S laborer taskings.  Ensures that the Company maintains compliance with all applicable Federal, State, and local regulations.  Supports the development of EHS programs and projects; provides support for the Company’s Environmental, Health and Safety Management System (EHSMS) requirements and helps establishment, implementation and maintenance in accordance with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.  Promotes a Total EHS Culture of ownership and accountability for safety of all workers and protection of the environment.

  1. The EHS Coordinator candidate typically has experience in Industrial Safety or Environmental Compliance or 5-7 years of shipyard EHS experience and 2 years of Coordinator experience.

  2. Extensive knowledge of ship repair or other manufacturing operations, facilities, processes and operating procedures to understand the impact that Federal, State and Local regulations is beneficial.
  3. Knowledgeable of:
  1. Applicable Federal, State and local EHS regulations (1915, 1910, EPA).
  2. Presentation techniques for EHS training.
  3. Techniques used to recognize HS hazards and environmental risks.
  4. Working with and management of hazardous materials and wastes.
  5. Ship configuration, shipbuilding techniques and operations.
  6. Safe operation of tools and machinery.
  1. Ensure employees are adequately protected from hazards and protect the environment, by:
  1. Monitor the workplaces frequently to identify unsafe or unhealthful conditions and actual/potential spills or releases into the environment.
  2. Take prompt action to correct hazardous conditions and releases to the environment.
  3. If serious hazards identified, must take immediate interim action to safeguard employees and protect the environment. 
  4. Report all unsafe or unhealthful conditions and actual/potential releases to the Environment.
  5. Seek suggestions from employees for improvement of workplace conditions and environmental stewardship.
  1. Must be able to read and write effectively; ability to accurately interpret federal, state, and company policies and verbally communicate same to employees.
  2. Intermediate math, computer, telephone, radio, and camera skills.
  3. Must be able to use reference materials, employs organizational skills, and uses time and resources effectively to actively promote safety, solve problems, and implement best management processes.

  1. WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

 

  1. Reports to the EHS Supervisor.
  2. Maintains internal contacts with all departments, primarily Production Managers and Shop Foremen.
  3. Maintains healthy relationships with Customers, Host Facilities, and Service Providers (vendors, contractors, and subcontractors). 
  4. Assigns duties to and guides the activities of 5S Laborers.

 

  1. PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  1. Leads and guides the activities of 5S Junior Laborers.
  2. Conducts daily EHS inspections of assigned areas ensuring that all operations (including those of Sub-Contractors) are in compliance with Federal, State and local regulations and NASSCO EHS Policies and Procedures; identify EHS hazards or deficiencies and initiates corrective action through production supervision.
  3. Prepares written reports on inspections, accident investigations, statistical information on discrepancies and corrections.
  4. Reviews documentation and identifies deficiencies and potential problems.
  5. Supervises and conducts inspections throughout the organization and ensure all operations (including subcontractors) to ensure compliance with EHS policies and work instructions. 
  6. Identifies EHS hazards or deficiencies and initiate corrective action.
  7. Reviews current literature and trade publications in order to remain current regarding OSHA, EPA and other applicable EHS standards and regulations.
  8. Establishes a close working relationship and communicate with Department Managers, Project Managers, and Ship Superintendents on a regular basis. Other responsibilities and duties as assigned.

 

  1. ACCOUNTABILITY

 

  1. EHS 5S Coordinators are responsible for ensuring that all EHS legislation is adhered to and policies and practices are followed.  They help to plan, implement, monitor and review the protective and preventative measures that companies are required or choose to follow, and work to minimize operational losses, occupational health problems, accidents, injuries, spills, and releases to the environment.
  2. Effectively help support the EHS Leadership Team, providing maximum value to NASSCO’s EHS posture.
  3. Provide Production Managers and Supervisors with the tools necessary to provide a safe working environment for employees.
  4. Assist in the elimination of at risk conditions and behaviors.
  5. Coach and train employees in EHS requirements and safe work practices.
  6. Enforce EHS policy and procedures.

  1. UNIQUE/ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Preferred certifications:  Certified Hazardous Material Manager, 40 Hour HAZWOPER Certification, DOT Training, EHSMS auditor certifications, emergency first aid, bloodborne pathogen, Shipyard Competent person training, OSHA 5410, OSHA 3095, Certified Safety Professional and other specific related training to EHS program management. 

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to vapors, gases, dust, welding/burning fumes, and smoke.  The employee must be able to spend up to 25% of time in an outdoor shipyard environment in all climates.  The noise level is usually moderate to extremely noisy 75% of the time, which may include sirens, horns, chipping, and hammering.

 

Must be able to gain access to all work locations including government and private ship yards and/or vessels.
