We currently have an exciting opportunity in our Environmental Health & Safety department. This position specifically is located in Norfolk, Virginia. We are looking for an Environmental Engineer.

  1. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSE

 

       Incumbent supports a Senior Environmental Engineer, in the planning and management of environmental programs and projects.  These responsibilities may include:

 

  • Assist to plan, develop and implement programs, policies and procedures to minimize the potential environmental impacts associated with NASSCO-Norfolk’s operations.
  • Assist to develop, implement and coordinate NASSCO-Norfolk’s compliance programs and procedures related to hazardous materials/waste management, waste minimization/source reduction, air pollution control and wastewater discharge; assist in related training of facility personnel.
  • Develop a working knowledge of the permit process for all regulatory bodies governing NASSCO-Norfolk’s activities, and assist to obtain/maintain permits as required to conduct NASSCO-Norfolk operations or construction of facilities.
  • Develop an awareness of current developments in environmental laws and regulations to determine their applicability and impact on NASSCO-Norfolk.
  • Serve as an assistant NASSCO-Norfolk representative during inspections and at meetings and hearings before appropriate local, state and national regulatory agencies as well as various technical and civic committees or organizations relating to environmental matters.
  • Assist to administer all monitoring and reporting as required by the environmental regulations and permits. This may include establishing sampling and analysis procedures; compiling, analyzing and evaluating the generated data; and preparing the required reports.
  • As needed, perform sampling and/or field analyses of liquid or solid industrial wastes.
  • Assists in incident/spill investigation and reporting when required.

 

The incumbent is expected to exercise a high degree of eagerness in the performance of these duties, keeping the Manager of Environmental Engineering advised of the status of the work, including any (potential) problem areas.

 

  1. SKILLS AND DEMANDS

                   

  • This position requires knowledge of the principles and techniques of Environmental Engineering typically gained through a through an Bachelors of Science degree (e.g., environmental/chemical engineering, chemistry, biology or other science) or a minimum of three years related experience in an environmental compliance function or a combination of the two.
  • Prior environmental compliance experience in an industrial, manufacturing, or maritime setting is preferred, but not required.
  • Incumbent must have a basic understanding of the concept and application of environmental regulations and permits applicable to manufacturing operations.
  • Effective written and oral communicative skills and the ability to use standard word processing and spreadsheet software are mandatory.  The ability to effectively interface with and make presentations before senior staff is required.  The position demands a sense of responsibility, attention to detail and the ability to effectively manage multiple commitments.

While performing the duties of the position, the incumbent must be able to walk to all yard locations and occasionally aboard vessels as part of daily inspections. The employee is occasionally exposed to dust, welding/burning fumes, smoke and moderate noise levels when performing inspections. Must be able to handle stressful situations.

 

  IV.                   WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

 

Reports directly to the Environmental Engineering Manager, and schedules own activities within management guidelines.  Coordinates with EHS Supervisors and other EHS Team members for tasks necessary to support permit and regulatory requirements.

 

The incumbent works under general direction, as to results expected, and independently determines the general approach and specific solutions to technical problems.  Work is reviewed upon completion for adequacy in meeting objectives. Incumbent has demonstrated good judgment in setting schedules and assessing risk.

 

Provides frequent coordination across organizational lines within NASSCO-Norfolk and interfaces with regulatory agencies and consultants as required to accomplish assigned tasks.  Independently performs most work assignments and may provide technical guidance to other EHS Team members.

 

       V.                  PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Incumbent plans and manages environmental programs and projects of routine scope that may include several other work groups or departments.  Incumbent participates in projects of significant scope under the leadership of the Senior Environmental Engineer.  These responsibilities include:

 

  1. Plan, develop and implement programs, policies and procedures to minimize the potential environmental impacts associated with NASSCO’s operations.

 

  1. Develop, implement and coordinate NASSCO-Norfolk’s compliance programs and procedures related to hazardous materials/waste management, waste minimization/source reduction, air pollution control and wastewater discharge; assist in related training of facility personnel.

 

  1. Maintain a working knowledge of the permit process for all regulatory bodies governing NASSCO-Norfolk’s activities, and assist to obtain/maintain permits as required to conduct NASSCO-Norfolk operations at Company facilities.

 

  1. Maintain awareness of current developments in environmental laws and regulations to determine their applicability and impact on NASSCO-Norfolk and advise the Environmental Engineering Manager.

 

  1. Serve as a NASSCO-Norfolk representative during inspections and at meetings and hearings before appropriate local, state and national regulatory agencies as well as various technical and civic committees or organizations relating to environmental matters.

 

  1. Administer all monitoring and reporting as required by the environmental regulations and permits. This includes establishing sampling and analysis procedures; compiling, analyzing and evaluating the generated data; and preparing the required reports.

 

  1. Provide technical advice and expertise in specialty areas to the Manager of Environmental Engineering, and provide technical guidance to other employees at NASSCO-Norfolk and to lower-level Environmental Engineers and other EHS Team members.
