We currently have an exciting opportunity in our Welding department. This position specifically is located in Norfolk, Virginia. We are looking for an Electrical Handyman.  The work schedule is 0600 to 1445 with 45 min lunch.

  1. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSE (Job Description)

 

The Handyman is responsible for accomplishing work in accordance with work specifications, safety, with the highest quality, in a professional manner.  Regular, reliable attendance on-site is an essential function of the job.

 

  1. POSITION DEMANDS (Education/Training)

                   

    1. Must be able to set up and break down equipment, including helping Journeymen run hoses; operate power tools; clean the work area and properly dispose of garbage, scrap and other material as directed by supervisor.
    2. Must be able to accomplish the semi-skilled functions within the trade where assigned.
    3. Must be able to check out, deliver, return and properly care for the required material and tools used in the trade.
    4. Must be able to identify and use the equipment and tools used in the trade.
    5. Must be able to perform preventive maintenance on shop machinery and equipment used in the employee’s trade, such as lubricating machinery, checking fluid levels in equipment or making minor adjustments as directed.
    6. Must be able to organize, arrange and maintain order in stockrooms and other material staging areas.
    7. Must be able to ensure that you are working as safely and as productively as possible, maintaining quality control at all times.
    8. Must have good housekeeping skills and be able to maintain a clean, hazard-free work environment and to ensure that job site is left in a safe and clean condition prior to departure.
    9. Must be able to follow established policies and procedures, including but not limited to time keeping procedures.
    10. Must be fully aware of emergency and evacuation procedures, to include muster locations and the supervisors’ requirement to account for their personnel.
    11. Must be able to work well with others.
    12. Must be able to understand and follow written and verbal instructions in English.
    13. Must be able to perform job safely.
    14. Must be able to recognize and avoid potential safety hazards.
    15. Must know what personal protective equipment (PPE) to use and when.
    16. Must be able to navigate a ship and understand compartment designation, where applicable.
    17. Must have basic knowledge of math.

  1. VISUAL REQUIREMENTS

 

Required to have visual acuity to perform an activity such as: operating machines where the job is at or within arm’s reach or performing mechanical or skilled trades’ tasks of a non-repetitive nature such as ones by electricians, technicians, service people, painters, mechanics, etc.

 

Must be able to climb on and around ships and walk to other yard areas and requires extended periods of standing and walking (75%). Inspections and work may require climbing ladders, working at heights, walking on scaffolding and observing co-workers using tools and equipment. Lifting/carrying tools and parts weighing up to 50 lbs. on frequent basis.  Standing, bending, sitting, reaching, pushing, pulling, crouching, kneeling, handling, finger dexterity, feeling, eye/hand/foot coordination, seeing, hearing required. Selecting appropriate tools for jobs, as per trade classification. Works in tight, confined work spaces on board ship and is exposed to varied temperatures, wind, wet and humid conditions, fumes, odors and dust, vibrations from ship and hand tools.

 

  1. WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

 

Reports to the Sheetmetal Shop Foreman / General Foreman. 

 

  1. PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Ensure that WAF ticket is on the job site and that it is for the specific job being accomplished.  Must ensure that no work will be accomplished without a WAF posted at location of repairs.
  2. Ensure that any other safety issues are complied with that relate to the specific job being accomplished (ex., special staging, face shields for grinding, protective clothing for hot work related jobs, breathing apparatus with correct cartridges, etc.)
  3. Ensure that you are trained for qualified for the work you are assigned to do (ex., JLG, forklift, welding, brazing, special electrical/mechanical repairs, etc.)
  4. Ensure that you and personnel working under your direction are working safely and as productively as possible, maintaining quality control at all times
  5. Ensure that job site is left in a safe and clean condition prior to departure
  6. Ability to complete assignment with direction of supervision.

  1. UNIQUE/ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

 

Must be able to access all Navy installations and other shipyards.  Must have reliable transportation.  Must be able to work aboard vessels, climb ladders, and work in tanks and confined spaces.  Must be able to wear personal protective equipment.  Must be able to work evening and weekend hours. 

 

May require up to 30% travel.
