JOURNEYPERSON 4 (Shipfitter)


  • Be able to plan and complete work with little supervision using blueprints. 
  • Be knowledgeable in layout or plates, pipes and structural shapes, including flat layouts and complex layouts involving projection and compound angles. 
  • Be knowledgeable of ship related nomenclature and be able to locate structures in relationship to frames, longitudinal stringers, centerlines, etc. 
  • Know weld symbols and how they apply to material preparation for welding. 
  • Skills should include tack welding, burning, use of various power tools such as shears, saws, presses, etc. 
  • Must be capable of making templates as needed for fabrications and/or installation of ship structures. 
  • Must be capable of assembling foundations, deck houses, and specialized structures for all areas of the ship.
  • Must know the guide lines of 5 S and be aware of the standard items.


JOURNEYPERSON 3 (Shipfitter)


  • Must be able to work with little supervision. 
  • Be knowledgeable in the use of handtools such as grinders, saws, shears, etc. 
  • Be familiar with weld symbols and blueprints in order to facilitate layout and assembly of bulkheads foundations, handrails and miscellaneous ship sub assemblies. 
  • Be able to tack weld and burn.
  • Must know the guide lines of 5 S and be aware of the standard items.


JOURNEYPERSON 2 (Shipfitter)


  • Be able to layout and cut material for basic angle, pipe and plate foundations. 
  • Be able to tack weld and burn. 
  • Be able to use shears, drill presses, saws, etc.
  • Must be able to understand blueprints and use them in daily task.
  • Must know the guide lines of 5 S and be aware of the standard items.


JOURNEYPERSON 1 (Shipfitter)


  • With supervision, layout and assemble basic angle, pipe and plate foundations, using blueprints for guidance. 
  • Work with shears, drill presses, saws, etc. under supervision.
  • Must know the guide lines of 5 S and be aware of the standard items.











































The worker is required to have visual acuity to perform an activity such as: operating machines where the seeing job is at or within arm’s reach or performing mechanical or skilled trades tasks of a non-repetitive nature such as ones by electricians, technicians, service people, painters, mechanics, etc.




Must be able to climb on and around ships and walk to other yard areas and requires extended periods of standing and walking (75%). Inspections and work may require climbing ladders, working at heights, walking on scaffolding and observing co-workers using tools and equipment. Lifting/carrying tools and parts weighing up to 50 lbs. on frequent basis.  Standing, bending, sitting, reaching, pushing, pulling, crouching, kneeling, handling, finger dexterity, feeling, eye/hand/foot coordination, seeing, hearing required. Selecting appropriate tools for jobs, as per trade classification. Works in tight, confined work spaces on board ship and is exposed to varied temperatures, wind, wet and humid conditions, fumes, odors and dust, vibrations from ship and hand tools, constant moving machinery, possible toxic and caustic chemicals.
