We currently have an exciting opportunity in our Production department. This position specifically is located in Norfolk, Virginia. We are looking for a Trade Superintendent.  The work schedule is Monday – Friday, day shift.

  1. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSE (Job Description)

 

This position supervises Welders, Shipfitters and Pipefitters.

 

  1. POSITION DEMANDS (Education/Training)

 

Typically has BA/BS plus 10 years proven shipbuilding experience in supervisory roles, or AA/AS plus 15 years proven shipbuilding experience in supervisory roles or 20 years proven shipbuilding experience in supervisory roles. Working knowledge of contracting and estimating procedures. Demonstrated knowledge and utilization of production processes, methods, and technology. Effective leadership, communication, and team-building skills. Proven ability in people environment.

Must possess expert ability to effectively communicate with other disciplines, groups and customers to resolve conflicts and possess an in depth knowledge of:

  • Ship repair, overhaul and modernization processes and procedures.
  • Repair conversion procedures, machinery, and production, planning and estimating methods.
  • Trade technical work practices and processes.
  • Management, training and team building of staffs comprised of diverse support personnel.
  • Planning, Scheduling, Estimating, Engineering and Contractual methods and processes in a Government environment.

  • Project Management methodologies and processes.
  • Material Procurement processes.

  1. WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

 

Reports to the Production Manager. Supports the Program Management Organization by maintaining liaison with the availability Project Manager. Liaison with external groups such as suppliers, manufacturers, and customers. Develops and maintains communication at all levels internal to NASSCO-Norfolk to improve the overall business processes with emphasis on safety, quality, cost and schedule management.

 

  1. PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Supervises Welders, Shipfitters and Pipefitters
  • Maintains an overview of all work scheduled and meets with their organization to assess the status.
  • Monitors the overall cost efficiency for their organization, identifies issues and develops corrective actions to prevent and or mitigate the impacts.
  • Joint responsibility with project management for trade performance to meet NASSCO-Norfolk’s schedule and cost objectives
  • Monitors trade mandated programs such as Daily Schedules, Housekeeping, ESTC cards, PII’s, etc.
  • Monitors trade production rates and develops action plans to reduce the rates
  • Plans and provides manpower resources and technical guidance to support availability management activities through hiring, training, and subcontracting
  • Advises on estimate and costing data based upon trade efficiencies and manpower for accepting work during proposal bid reviews or growth work during an availability 
  • Defines and controls production quality within trade
  • Monitors processes for continuous improvement in a controlled environment and ensures the fullest support by all supervision 
  • Searches out and reviews new technology that will help to improve quality and reduce cost  
  • Analyzes and develops safety policies and procedures to ensure goals of NASSCO-Norfolk and the trade are achieved as well as chairing trade safety investigation for their department
  • Controls, coordinates and manages trades via Foreman and General Foreman
  • Controls department’s direct and indirect overhead accounts
  • Prepares and submits capital expenditures
  • Performs additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

 

  1. ACCOUNTABILITY

 

Directly accountable to the Production Manager for the efficient and effective performance of trade personnel while adhering to budgetary, manpower, schedule, quality and safety requirements.

 

  1. UNIQUE/ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

 

Regular, reliable attendance on-site is an essential function of the job. Will be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  Must be willing to travel and have reliable transportation.  Must qualify for a Common Access Card (CAC) or RapidGate badge and a security clearance.  Must have reliable record of attendance and punctuality and be available for overtime as required.  Must be able to physically transit all areas of the facility.  Regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects or controls, and to talk and hear.  Must have good eye/hand coordination.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Must be familiar with working in a naval-ship-work-environment and be able to go aboard marine vessels and the drydock, climb ladders, work in tanks and confined spaces, and wear personal protective equipment.  These areas can be dirty, dusty, hot or cold, and noisy (which may include sirens, horns, chipping, and hammering).
