We currently have an exciting opportunity in our Waterfront Operations department. This position specifically is located in Norfolk, Virginia. We are looking for a Waterfront Operations Intern. The work schedule is Monday – Friday, 1st shift 0600 to 1445 with 45 min lunch.

- ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSE
This position is an 8-10 week temporary one and will be utilized to provide a training opportunity for young students to be exposed to ship repair.
- POSITION DEMANDS (EDUCATION/TRAINING)
Successful candidates must be currently enrolled (full-time) in a four-year college or university and be 18 years or older at the start of the internship. Preference is given to seniors and juniors as well as those:
- Enrolled in a Maritime College or Engineering Program,
- Who have served aboard a ship at sea or are in a program focused on Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, or other maritime related disciplines
Must be available for 8-10 consecutive weeks.
POSITION DEMANDS (REQUIRED EXPERIENCE)

- Ability to understand ship specifications, technical drawings, etc.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office products.
- General knowledge of ship repair or other manufacturing operations processes and operating procedures.
- The ability to effectively work within a team in a collaborative environment.
- A sense of responsibility and attention to detail of the highest degree.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- An interest in the implementation of engineering principles to repair activities.
- The ability to understand basic Project Management skills.

- WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
- The Waterfront Operations Intern will report directly to the Director of Programs.
- Position requires the individual to interact with various levels of management within Waterfront Operations as well as other Departments on a case-by-case basis.
- PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
While interning at NASSCO-Norfolk, students will not only be given the opportunity to practically apply the skills they've acquired in the classroom, but they will be expected to become an integral part of the NASSCO-Norfolk team. Because of the complexity that is inherent in ship repair, the Waterfront Operations Intern will find multiple avenues for contribution and learning. Specifically, interns can anticipate involvement in and exposure to the following areas:
- Day to day execution of availabilities.
- Tracking specific critical work items and ensuring seamless execution and deconfliction of other work.
- Implementation of basic cost and schedule metrics to track ongoing work.
- Understanding of basic contracting actions and impacts to execution of work.
- Gaining an understanding of quality requirements.
- Production efforts and labor force utilization for work execution.
- Assisting in monitoring corrective action requests.
- Interaction with the Engineering team and implementation of PCPs.
- Dry dock weight calculations.
- Other responsibilities and duties as assigned.
- ACCOUNTABILITY
- The Waterfront Operations Intern will be required to provide weekly training status updates to the Director of Programs.
- UNIQUE/ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to access all leased and owned property and go aboard ships. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects or controls, and to talk and hear. The work environment is usually in an office setting but the employee is occasionally exposed to dust, welding/burning fumes, smoke and moderate noise levels when in a shipboard environment.
