General Dynamics NASSCO-Norfolk is the consolidation of two great shipyards that have operated in the Port of Hampton Roads, Virginia for more than 50 years - the former Metro Machine Corporation and the former Earl Industries.  Along with our facilities in Bremerton, Washington, our expertise encompasses experience on more than 450 ships, a Master Ship Repair Agreement (MSRA) contract, and the maintenance and repair of aircraft carriers and ships from the Navy's amphibious fleet.


Responsible for conducting experiments and tests and evaluating data to assist Production and Quality Assurance personnel in the development and application of new or improved welding equipment; welding techniques, procedures, and practices. Also must maintain a daily presence in production areas to assist production in problem resolution. Reports directly to the Trade Superintendent. Has open communication with all Steel trade supervisors, production workers, and yard maintenance.



  • Run weld procedure qualification testing to include required documentation
  • Assist with the analysis and disposition of product nonconformance decisions
  • Assist in the implementation on new techniques and/or processes during the development stages
  • Evaluates and documents welder skills, abilities and proficiencies when applicable
  • Participates in development of standard/ best practices and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Performs other responsibilities as assigned
  • Regular, reliable, on-site attendance is an essential function of this position




  • HS Diploma required and a minimum of 6 years of experience in a production welding environment
  • Practical experience utilizing the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) process and proficiency with the Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW) process, Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) process, Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) process, and mechanized variants of these processes
  • Ability to plan, schedule, and coordinate projects to complete on schedule with project status reports.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Basic computer skills in Microsoft word, Excel and Power Point, and Outlook
  • Inspects Fabrication, Assembly and Erection areas checking for utilization of proper welding sequences, joint designs, and correct fit up
  • Tests and evaluates new welding equipment and welding consumables for utilization in the shipyard
  • Acts as liaison between production and owner representatives, American Bureau of Shipping, and NAVSEA in order to resolve welding and fabrication issues
  • Conducts R&D experiments for weld joint designs and material testing
  • Other responsibilities as required
  • Assist in providing hands on training to production welders for manual and semi-automatic welding
  • Must be familiar with the requirements of MIL-STD 009-12, MIL-STD-1689, MIL-STD-2035 AND TECH PUB 248, and Tech Pub 278
  • Must be able to certify as level II NDT inspector
  • Must be knowledgeable with both structural and pipe welding
  • Knowledge of orbital welding




Must be able to climb on and around ships, including stairs, ladders, masts, and scaffolding.  Must be able to work around moving machinery, at heights and in confining or restricted spaces aboard vessels under construction/repair.  Must be able to handle stressful situations.  Must be able to operate High Reach equipment, Sky Climbers and Dock arms.  Physical dexterity must allow for bending and reaching.  Requires extended periods of standing and walking (8 hr/day).  Specific vision ability required by this job include close, distance, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  Must be able to lift weights up to 50 pounds.  Must have good eye/hand coordination.  Must be physically able to commute to various areas in shipyard.  While performing the duties of this position, the employee may be exposed to dust, welding/burning fumes, and smoke. The noise level in this environment is usually moderate.




Accountable to the Production and QA department for all aspects of weld procedure and welder qualification to include testing and QMS systems.
