SUMMARY

Manages and directs the work of trades and subcontractors to perform work within their areas of responsibility to meet project goals. Manages production and other processes in a team-based manufacturing environment. May facilitate self-directed work teams, provide training to team and peers, and interact with internal and external customers with respect to product planning, problem resolution and process improvement. Directly responsible for the efficient operation of the shipbuilding processes including safety, quality, schedule, and cost.  The Performance of the Assistant Manager SOC 6 is primarily measured by the success of the construction cycle and delivery of the ship; this is measured in terms of schedule and budget performance, as well as quality conformance.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

  • Supervises Area Managers to ensure safety, quality, schedule and productivity goals are being meet.
  • Leads department training.
  • Contributes to the creation of SOC policies and procedures with the SOC\Ship Manager.
  • Leads ship wide safety and housekeeping and ensures goals are being meet.
  • Responsible for ship wide logistic planning and execution.
  • Provides expertise in quality and process improvement techniques; identify problem areas and manages the corrective action.
  • Responsible for material and equipment protection in all areas of the ship.
  • Leads ship side production/test schedule and ensures requirements and goals are being met.
  • Leads ship wide trade activities and leads corrective action with the General Supervisors and Superintendents.
  • Leads resolution of conflicting trade/subcontractor priorities.
  • Manages schedule and budget deviations, and leads corrective action.
  • Develops management zone and ship wide work strategies, plans and sequencing with assistance from planning and trade supervision. Provides consistent feedback and improvements for follow on hulls.
  • Exercise discretion and independent judgment by anticipating schedule and budget deviations, and initiates corrective action.
  • Provides appropriate feedback (lessons learned, ECNs, IDRs, etc.) to Ship/SOC management, Superintendent, and Planning.
  • Performs all job responsibilities in accordance with NASSCO’s Mission, Vision, Values and Principles.
  • Mentors Area Manager I, II and III
  • Other responsibilities and duties as assigned.

 

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School graduate or equivalent with good knowledge of trade responsibilities, ship systems, and shipbuilding practices.
  • Position requires ten (10) years of experience in a shipbuilding environment in a position of responsibility. Experience as Area Manager, Process Lane Manager, General Supervisor or equivalent desired.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills. Effective reports are a key deliverable of this individual’s activities.
  • Good team-building skills.
  • Prior supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Successfully demonstrated knowledge of NASSCO’s policies and procedures.
  • Must be able to climb vertical ladders and scaffolding, and work at heights.  Must be physically able to commute to various areas of shipyard.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to dust, welding/burning fumes, and smoke.  The noise level is usually moderate to extremely noisy, which may include sirens, horns, chipping, and hammering.
