A creative, versatile Corporate Writer and Communications Specialist to craft snappy, engaging content, while coordinating a variety of internal and external projects.  The Communications Specialist will research, write, and edit content for all audiences/media ranging from websites, to social media, and the internal company publications. This will include selecting, writing and reviewing editorials and articles for The Shipbuilder, our internal magazine. The Communications Specialist will create and manage our social media strategy, which includes both traditional social sites, and our talent related partnerships (Indeed, LinkedIn, etc.) Project management is a required strength, from initiating contact with participants, to securing appropriate approvals, is an essential function of this position.


This individual will support GD NASSCO's PR/Communication efforts, reporting to the Manager of Communications and Strategic Outreach. The Communications Specialist will utilize broad expertise and unique knowledge to lead and execute assignments related to internal and external publications. They will create a strategy to maintain and improve the company's brand/image, support the NASSCO business strategy, and engage employees. Other duties as assigned.

  • Effective communication skills with the ability to engage media and employees.
  • Promote and embed ONE NASSCO in all communications and branding efforts.
  • Manage the company’s social media profiles, including posting compelling content, monitoring comments, engaging on behalf of the company and analyzing performance
  • Write and edit copy for a wide range of media and purposes:  websites, The Shipbuilder, newsletters, executive bios, and other communications materials, in support of company communications goals and programs.
  • Assist NASSCO departments on communication articles and initiatives.
  • Prepare articles and layout for company magazine “The Shipbuilder”.
  • Responsible for selecting, writing and reviewing editorial copy of The Shipbuilder.
  • Assigns and directs graphic design and approves final proofs for print pages, and distribution.
  • Responsible for developing metrics to measure results against objectives of the publication.
  • Recommend, maintain and edit editorial policy.
  • Develop editorial policy yearly and editorial calendar for The Shipbuilder magazine (i.e. less time sensitive articles, longer pieces).
  • Interview source persons and researches subjects for facts and articles to be published.
  • Develop and assist with presentations and written materials that support the company needs aligned with departmental goals.
  • Remain current on issues relating to internal NASSCO activities, other GD business units and the customer/supplier communities.
  • Assist in evaluating the effectiveness of current communications efforts.
  • Assist in facilitating the effective flow of information in and among all levels of employees and management that supports organizational goals and objectives.
  • Employ measurement techniques to gauge success of programs and adjust program as data suggest ensuring alignments with business objectives.
  • Develop processes that encourage a professional approach to communications.
  • Assists in improvement of intranet, as business and communications tool.


  • Bachelor’s degree required; undergrad degree in communications, public relations, or journalism preferred.
  • Minimum of 2+ years of PR/communications or relevant discipline/industry experience required.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills and an understanding of effective communications based on educational background or job-related experience.
  • Strong understanding of the tools and strategies to execute a social media program
  • Strong project management skills including prioritization of multiple tasks and deliverables.
  • Strong research and writing skills, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and within a dynamic team environment.
  • Spanish language skills a plus.
  • US Navy, veteran, or prior shipyard experience a plus
  • Sound editorial judgment in discerning what info is published internally and what is shared externally
  • Word and Power Point skills required desktop publishing and photo editing skill desirable.
  • Experience in Adobe Creative Suite in Design or PageMaker
  • Solid computer software skills: Photoshop, Adobe illustrator, In Design, Wordpress, MS Outlook, etc.
  • Comfort with managing multiple, aggressive deadlines.
  • Strong decision-making skills, drafts speaking points and key messages
  • Successful project management skills.
  • Experience writing for multiple audiences.
  • Experience writing communications for corporation, including speeches, reports, articles, press releases, web a benefit.
