SUMMARY

 

Prepare and maintain as directed, design studies, proposals, purchase specifications, engineering calculations, test memos, test reports, and pre-contract design packages under technical guidance of a Supervisor or System Cognizant Engineer.  Communicate with other departments and provide them with technical assistance or information when needed.

 

Assistant Automation & Propulsion Integration Engineer: The specific duties for this assignment will include assisting Electrical, Mechanical, and Machinery engineers with the integration of the T-AO class propulsion, electrical, and automation systems.  Efforts will range from support to propulsion drive train alignment and integration to managing software and internal communications/alarms interfaces.  This position will supplement the current team personnel and can expect to be involved in a range of activities including: supporting test engineers trouble shooting in the field, collecting data on performance, communicating with the Government customer and regulatory bodies, and working with a range of equipment suppliers.  Assignments are likely to include other ship classes, other systems, and other responsibilities as time permits. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

 

  • Perform Design analysis and support calculations for engineering product development.
  • Develop designs for one or more designated systems including diagrams and related BOM’s using CAD/CAM system.
  • Provides assistance to Cognizant Engineers.  May be assigned functions of a Cognizant Engineer for elementary systems, under the technical oversight of a higher level Engineer or Supervisor. 
  • Assists in writing draft ship specifications and supports estimates for new contracts.
  • Assists in analysis of tests, trials, and other experiments, such as: noise surveys, vibration surveys, machinery signatures, and shaft alignment surveys.
  • Provides suggested interpretations of Regulatory Body rules, US Navy Specifications and Industry Standards.
  • Prepare scope for change orders and Engineering estimates.
  • Prepare and/ or assist in the preparation of Purchase Specifications and Test Memos.
  • Represent company on official business, as directed, including participating in presentations.
  • Communicates effectively with internal and external customers, including Owners and Suppliers, in design related matters.
  • Participates effectively in problem resolution teams.
  • Demonstrates professional and business skill aptitude.
  • Other responsibilities and duties as assigned.

 

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent.  E.I.T Certificate desirable. 3 to 4 years’ experience and one-year minimum experience in job specific discipline.
  • Demonstrated competency within discipline.
  • Demonstrated proficiency on at least one system design.
  • Familiarity with shipboard equipment. 
  • Ability to understand and apply Regulatory Body rules and regulations, US Navy and Industry standards.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Able to act for a Cognizant Engineer within assigned system.
  • Effective decision-maker requiring some guidance on occasions.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

 

Requires ability to work in office environment, go aboard ship during construction, climb ladders, work throughout yard as required, and participate in Sea Trials when required.  Work will generally be confined to a clean office environment but will at times, require participation in dusty, dirty, areas.  Is paid for formally structured and scheduled overtime.
