SUMMARY

Oversees the mechanical group of the Ship Systems Engineering department. The group includes engineers and designers, in development of assigned products, including drawings, analyses, calculations, reports, and correspondence. Assists Manager and Director in planning, scheduling and evaluating group.  Assigns work, evaluates quality and performance, ensures compliance with company policies, to include proper time keeping, and provides updates and status to senior staff as requested.  Assigns goals, mentors, coaches and evaluates assigned personnel both formally and informally.  Works with the various customers and vendors to reach resolution on complicated issues.  Responsible for Quality, Schedule and cost performance of assigned tasks.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

  • Develops team members to ensure team has the right skill mix and growth opportunities.
  • Leads change initiatives to streamline and improve processes.
  • Identifies root causes and implements preventive actions to ensure issues are not repeated.
  • Incorporates lessons learned to ensure processes and procedures are up-to-date.
  • Drives consistent process execution.
  • Motivates and supports team members to create an environment where new ideas are accepted and encouraged.
  • Collaborates with internal and external customers to deliver quality and on-time products.
  • Responsible for advance planning to support approved schedules, utilizing various management tools.
  • Prepares subordinates’ goals, evaluates performance in Success Factors and makes recommendations to Engineering Management for promotions and terminations and other personnel adjustments.
  • Responsible for all time charging by assigned personnel IAW company policy.
  • Represents the company in discussions with Regulatory Bodies, Owners, Vendors, etc. on technical subjects.
  • Represents the company on official business as directed.
  • Acts as Engineering Manager, as required.
  • Assumes added responsibility when required.

 

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • College graduate with Engineering BS degree preferred.
  • Eight (8) years experience in the Marine field required.
  • One (1) year of this experience must be as a Senior Engineer or equivalent level.
  • Must have proven track record of leadership, planning and organizing assigned work to successfully meet business objectives.
  • Pro-active leadership style.
  • Well rounded ability in many systems within discipline.
  • Requires ability to work in office environment, go aboard ships during construction, climb ladders, work throughout the yard as required, and participate in Sea Trials when required.
  • Work will generally be confined to a clean office environment but may at times require participation in dusty, dirty areas, requiring full adherence to NASSCO’s safety policies.

 

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to Manager, Director or VP.  Provides direction, technical assistance, coaching and mentoring to subordinates.  Will interface with other Engineering groups, Production, Quality Assurance, Purchasing, Vendors, Regulatory Bodies, and other disciplines as required.  Coordinates with supervisors across Engineering groups/divisions.  Will be informed of priorities and allowed to schedule work as necessary to complete required tasks.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY

Responsible for groups’ achievement of schedule, cost and quality commitments.  Accountable for subordinates’ individual performance
