Estimator, New Ship Construction - All Levels

SUMMARY

Develops labor and material estimates at a detailed level, with limited supervision, for new construction and change order estimating.

Estimating will be focused in the new construction shipbuilding areas of Structural/Steel and Mechanical/Pipe.  

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

  • Prepares and costs material take-offs.

  • Defines scope of production work at a detailed level.

  • Applies knowledge at a working level to solve problems.

  • Defines and communicates impact of decision making and actions taken to supervision.

  • Exercises prudent judgement at a detailed level within area of expertise.

  • Analyzes current and historic costs.

  • Develops performance analysis reporting.

  • Develops budget rates.

  • Audits budgeting process.

  • Other responsibilities and duties as assigned.

     

     

    SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Engineering undergraduate degree or equivalent plus three (3) years experience in marine engineering or production shipbuilding. 

  • Preffered experience in Structural/Steel or Mechanical/Pipe.

Analytical capability, familiarity with production (NASSCO preferred) processes, and proficiency in personal computers are desired.

Actively participates in implementing and monitoring continuous improvement initiatives to improve safety, improve quality, reduce cycle time, and reduce costs.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to spend up to 5% of time in an outdoor shipyard environment in all climates on occasion.  The noise level is usually moderate to noisy 5% of the time, which may include sirens, horns, chipping, and hammering. 

 

 

Must be able to climb on and around ships including vertical ladders to perform ship inspections.  Physical dexterity must allow for bending and reaching.  Must have good eye/hand coordination.  Must be able to handle stressful situations.  Must be physically able to commute to various areas in the shipyard.

 

 

 

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to the Manager, Cost Engineering.  Project Estimator will provide guidance on a specific project.  Some latitude in scheduling own activities.  Develop and maintain positive working relationships with peers in Engineering and Production within area of expertise. 

 

ACCOUNTABILITY

Accountable for determination and resulting pricing of scope of work at a detailed level in the estimate.
