Basic Qualifications


DoD SkillBridge Eligibility:

  • Has served at least 180 days on active duty
  • Is within 12 months of separation or retirement
  • Will receive an honorable discharge
  • Has taken any service TAPS/TGPS
  • Has attended or participated in an ethics brief within the last 12 months
  • Received Unit Commander (first O-4/Field Grade commander in chain of command) written authorization and approval to participate in DoD SkillBridge Program prior to start of internship.
  • Education: HS Diploma
  • This is an internship for a departing military employee, not for a student in college.

The General Dynamics NASSCO SkillBridge Military Internship program is being afforded to all ranks, enlisted or officer, both active duty Military Members of all supporting branches and Military Spouses. Participants are not eligible for compensation from the company, as they continue to receive military compensation and benefits as active-duty service members. A General Dynamics NASSCO SkillBridge Military Internship, whether entry or mid-level, is an opportunity for individuals to gain valuable civilian experience through specific industry training during their last 6 months of service, for up to 180 days. You will job-shadow and learn from experienced leaders and other smart, motivated people. This program will help you develop best in class skills on mission critical work. Participation in General Dynamics NASSCO SkillBridge Military Internship Program is voluntary, Service member-initiated, and must be authorized by the individuals chain of command prior to the start of the internship. Successful completion of all necessary company agreements and documentation will also be required.

SUMMARY

As a NASSCO Fire Department Skillbridge Intern, he/she will have the opportunity to observe/ participate in the day to day conditions of an all hazards fire department. The intern will participate in training exercises and supervised hands on evolutions. At the end of internship, candidate will gain necessary tools to help with application process to an established SFT F/F1 academy.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

  • Assists and supports fire and emergency calls under the direction of the duty supervisor and/or incident commander including but not limited to; lay hoses, carry and set up ladders, and use fire equipment.
  • Assists and supports in fire prevention methods including but not limited to:
    • Testing and setting up temporary fire mains on ships
    • Working with the Fire Techs, maintains a robust fire suppression equipment inventory (fire extinguisher, fire hose, nozzles, etc)
    • Conduct tours to ensure adequate water pressure to all areas of temp fire mains on ships and ensure adequate edge protection
  • Observes and assists in pre-fire and fire prevention inspections.
  • Participates in drills and training activities.
  • Other responsibilities and duties as assigned.
  • Gain Valuable Firefighter Knowledge, Hazardous Materials Awareness and Introduction to EMS.

 

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have the ability to provide solutions to routine technical problems.
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively, in both oral and written applications, which successfully supports other firefighters, employees and management.
  • Ability to safely follow simple commands

 

PREFERRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Basic knowledge of Firefighting, theories and concepts in the field and their practical applications to problems and situations ordinarily encountered.
  • CPR certificate
  • 3+ years of either:
    • Damage Control
    • Marine Chemist
    • Repair Technician

    • 304: Fire Marshall
  • From  Personnel Qualification Standard Series 43119 Damage Control:
    • 308: Team Leader, 310: Advanced First Aid, 313: Scene Leader, 318: Repair Party Leader, 319: Repair Electrician, 320: Damage Control Training Team Member
  • From Personnel Qualification Standard Series 43704 Chapter 2 Engineering Collaterals and Qualifications:
    • 316: Gas Free Petty Officer
  • Additional Courses:
    • U46A: Damage Control Assistant Senior Enlisted (DCASE)
    • 756B: Shipboard Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Defense Operations and Training Specialist
    • J-495-0419: Advance Shipboard Fire Fighting

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work occurs in both an outdoor shipyard environment and in an office setting. While performing the duties of this position, the employee must be able to work at heights and in confined or restricted spaces aboard vessels under construction/repair.  Daily inspections require climbing ladders, working at heights, walking on scaffolding, observing use of tools and operation of equipment/machinery. Physical dexterity must allow for bending, reaching, climbing, crawling, and working on ladders and scaffolding. Must be physically able to walk to all yard locations. Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds of weight.  Visual abilities required include close, distance and peripheral vision, depth perception and color recognition.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to dust, fumes, and smoke.  Must be able to spend up to 70% of time in an outdoor shipyard environment in all climates. The noise level is usually moderate to extremely noisy 70% of the time, which may include sirens, horns, chipping, and hammering.  Must be able to accomplish any task with Full PPE including but not limited to full turn outs, helmet and an SCBA.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY

Ensures NASSCO’s Injury and Illness Prevention Program meets company and regulatory requirements and is effectively implemented.  Responsible for the effective and efficient operation of the Safety and Fire Departments and for administering NASSCO’s Fire Management System.

  • Must meet DoD SkillBridge Qualifications as per DODI 1322.29.
