Job Summary

Calibrates, troubleshoots, repairs and installs instruments and equipment in shipboard control panels, shipyard related systems, tools and equipment.  Performs other related tasks as assigned, some of which may become essential to the position.

 

Qualifications Standards

 

Must have one-year experience or training as a calibration technician or similar field. Military equivalent training also acceptable.  Must have basic knowledge of electrical wiring. Must have the ability to analyze and interpret data. Must have ability to read circuits on a blue print and schematic diagrams. Knowledge of basic math skills. Must have ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and be available to work any shift.  Must comprehend written and verbal instructions and hear warning signals, read and comprehend safety instructions, regulations and warnings.

 

Essential Job Tasks

 

  1. Install panel meters into switchboards
  2. Solder wiring harness to instrument terminals
  3. Test circuit for power and/or good ground
  4. Assemble junction boxes and instrument brackets
  5. Set up laboratory and testing equipment
  6. Other tasks as may be assigned relevant to the trade

 

Materials, Tools, Equipment, Work Aids

 

Works with a variety of instruments and gauges using power and hand tools and test equipment, calibration standards, screwdrivers, wrenches, drills, jigs, templates, blueprints, work orders, and Navy standards manual. Personal protective equipment required.

 

 

Physical/Mental Involvement

 

Frequent lifting, carrying, pulling and pushing, prolonged bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, climbing ladders or equipment, reaching above shoulder or out in front.  Routinely will lift 50 lbs. and performs work in physically awkward and demanding positions.  Works in all areas of the shipyard and on board ships. Hearing warning signals, reading, and comprehending safety instructions. Must be able to maintain general safety awareness and avoid hazards commonly present in employee’s work area.

 

Marginal Job Tasks

 

Housekeeping in all work areas, including sweeping. May be required to attend safety, quality and/or process improvement meetings.

 

Environmental Factors

 

Exposure to fumes, odors, dust, and gases that could cause problems with respiratory system.  Temperature and ventilation could cause discomfort.  Exposure to constantly moving machines and mechanical parts.  Exposed to high levels of constant noise.
