Job Summary

 

Lays out reference points and dimensions on sheets, plates, tubes, and structural shapes for fabricating, welding, and assembling into structural metal products.  Performs other related tasks as assigned, some of which may become essential to the position.  

 

Qualifications Standards

 

Previous experience or training is required.  Must have knowledge of trigonometry, product design, and metal properties. Must have the ability to read blueprints, templates, and specifications. Must have the ability to do precision work. Must have the ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and be able to work any shift. Must be able to understand written and verbal instructions, hear warning signals, and read and comprehend safety instructions, regulations, and warnings.

 

Essential Job Tasks

 

  1. Plan and develop layouts as outlined on blueprints and templates by applying knowledge of trigonometry, product design, effect of head, and allowances for curvature and thickness of metal.
  2. Detail location and sequence of cutting, drilling, bending, rolling, punching, and welding operations.
  3. Use a variety of measuring and marking instruments to mark curves, lines, holes, dimensions, and weld symbols on work piece.
  4. Other tasks may be assigned relevant to the trade.

 

Materials, Tools, Equipment, Work Aids

 

Blueprints, templates, measuring instruments such as compasses, protractors, dividers, and rulers. Marking implements including scribes, soapstones, and punches. Personal protective equipment required.

 

Physical/Mental Involvement

 

Works in all areas of the shipyard and on board ships requiring repetitive or prolonged standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, pulling, seeing, hearing, and manual and finger dexterity. Must maintain general safety awareness by hearing warning signals, reading and comprehending safety instructions, and avoid hazards commonly present in an employee’s work area.

 

Marginal Job Tasks

 

Perform housekeeping, including sweeping, in all work areas. Attend safety, quality, and/or process improvement meetings as required.

 

Environmental Factors

 

Exposure to fumes, odors, dust, gases, various climates and temperatures, and low ventilation conditions, all of which may cause discomfort and/or respiratory difficulties. Exposure to constantly moving machines and mechanical parts and high levels of constant noise.

 

 

 

PAYSCALE

$30.82 - $34.17

 

 

Hourly Roles

This pay range is a reasonable estimate of the hourly range for this role. It takes into account the wide range of factors considered in making compensation decisions; including but not limited to skill sets, experience, training, and education.
