Job Summary

Uses line heating process of applying regulated heating and cooling to plates and shapes to achieve a desired curvature and to remove distortion and undesirable locked-in stress.  Performs other related tasks as assigned, some of which may become essential to the position.

 

Qualification Standards

Requires previous experience or training. Must have ability to use flame heating torch, and ability to read blueprints, and shape parts using templates or sketches.  Must have ability to work at heights and in confined spaces and access and move around ship safely.

 

Essential Job Tasks

1.    Lifts, positions, and tack-welds fitting aids and devices.

2.    Connects hoses from torch to tanks or manifolds of oxygen and fuel gas.

3.    Selects torch tip, computes gas pressure and mixture and speed of travel according to type and thickness of metal.

4.    Installs tip in torch and adjusts pressures for proper flame.

5.    Heats metal to a specified temperature in flat, overhead, vertical and horizontal positions, then cools metal using water.

 

Materials, Tools Equipment, Work Aids

Works on metal components using flame heating torch and water hoses for cooling.  Uses 7018 and 11018 welding rod to tack weld faring devices such as strong-backs, dogs, and saddles temporarily in place.

 

Physical/Mental Involvement

Requires repetitive or prolonged bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, and climbing.  Routinely will lift between 50 and 75 pounds and perform work in physically awkward and demanding positions.  May have to do work involving contact with irritant dust, fumes, or chemicals.
