JOB SUMMARY

Conducts system checks and walk throughs for system completeness in accordance with system diagrams and drawings.  Supports commissioning as well as tests equipment in accordance with established test procedures.  Conducts the day to day operations of all ship’s systems and equipment.  Repairs and maintains ship’s systems and equipment including but not limited to compressors, purifiers, heat exchangers, valves, engines, cranes, and winches. Conducts bunkering of fuel and lube oils as well as the transferring of fluids from one tank to another.  Performs other related tasks as assigned, some of which may become essential to the position. 

 

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS

This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent education, a minimum of three years of experience in a related field or graduate of a Diesel or Aircraft Mechanic training school, or three years in any of the following Navy ratings:  MM (BT), AD, CM, EN, GS, HT, or MR.  Must have the ability to read and comprehend mechanical drawings, technical manuals, and hydraulic and pneumatic diagrams. Must be capable of assembling/installing complex mechanical systems while meeting alignment criteria of systems and equipment. Must be proficient in the use of precision measurement tools. Must have an understanding of both imperial and metric measuring systems. Must have shop mathematic skills with an understanding of and able to work with decimals and fractions. Must have the ability to lineup machinery equipment such as but not limited to fuel, water, and air systems to support the machinery plant operations on board ships. Must be able to perform initial light offs of ship board systems and conduct testing in accordance with test procedures and technical manuals. Must have the he ability to troubleshoot and take corrective action when systems and equipment are not operating within the designed parameters. Must have the ability to stand watch while equipment is in operation, make rounds, and take readings.  Must have the ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and be able to work any shift. Must be able to understand written and verbal instructions, hear warning signals, and read and comprehend safety instructions, regulations, and warnings.

 

 ESSENTIAL JOB TASKS

  1.    Operate and test all on board systems and equipment.
    2.    Support commissioning.
    3.    Assemble and install complex piping systems. 
    4.    Support machinery plant operations including fuel, water, and air systems. 
    5.    Conduct initial ship board system light offs and system verifications.
    6.    Troubleshoot and repair equipment when not operating according to specifications.
    7.    Stand watch, make rounds, take readings, and correct deficiencies in operating systems when deviations in designed parameters occur. 
    8.    Other job duties may be assigned relevant to the trade.

 

MATERIALS, TOOLS EQUIPMENT, WORK AIDS

Hand, power, and portable tools, and measuring equipment.  Personal protective equipment required.

 

PHYSICAL/MENTAL INVOLVEMENT

Works in all areas of the shipyard and on board ships requiring repetitive or prolonged standing, walking, balancing, reaching, pushing/pulling, bending, kneeling, seeing, hearing, and manual and finger dexterity. Must be able to occasionally lift/carry items that weigh up to 50 lbs. unassisted. Must have colored vision. Must have the ability to climb stairs, ladders, and crawl through small openings. Must be able to maintain general safety awareness by hearing warning signals, reading and comprehending safety instructions, and avoid hazards commonly present in an employee’s work area.

 

   MARGINAL JOB TASKS

Perform housekeeping, including sweeping, in all work areas. Attend safety, quality, and/or process improvement meetings as required. 

 

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

Exposure to ship movement including rocking back and forth and pitching up and down while the ship is at sea. Exposure to fumes, odors, dust, gases, various climates and temperatures, and low ventilation conditions, all of which may cause discomfort and/or respiratory difficulties. Exposure to constantly moving machines and mechanical parts and high levels of constant noise. 

PAYSCALE: 

$34.96 - $38.31

 

This pay range is a reasonable estimate of the hourly range for this role. It takes into account the wide range of factors considered in making compensation decisions; including but not limited to skill sets, experience, training, and education.
