Job Summary
Performs mechanical repairs and maintenance to the yard facilities, utilities, and production equipment. Performs new installations and modifications to yard facilities, buildings, structures, utility distributions, and production equipment. Installs and removes temporary portable production support equipment portable utility distributions and other services on-board ships and in the yard. Performs other related tasks as assigned, some of which may become essential to the position.
Qualification Standards
Requires a high school education. Requires a trade school certificate in mechanical training or equivalent work experience performing mechanical repairs. Other skills that are needed; precision measurement, precision alignment, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, engine repair and overhaul, and equipment operation. Must be able to read and troubleshoot equipment and systems from schematics, diagram and other manufacture supplied documentation. Must be able to work at heights or in enclosed spaces. Must have a valid Drivers License. Must be able to use burning and welding equipment to do minor repairs. Must be trained in energy recognition, personal protective equipment and lockout/tagout procedures.
Essential Job Tasks
- Inspects equipment to insure safe and reliable operations.
- Performs equipment service and repairs on equipment using test equipment, hand, tools, pneumatic tools and other power tools,
- Fills out various required reports and documentation, such as; work orders, inspection forms, discrepancy sheets, log books, and service forms.
Materials, Tools Equipment, Work Aids
1. Test equipment such as dial indicators, rulers, pressure and flow gauges, voltage meter, calipers, micrometers, tachometers and other equipment installed meters and gauges.
2. Tools and work aids such as: hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, bearing and gear pullers, hand and table saws, bench grinders, files, polishers, port-a-powers, hand trucks, lifts, chain falls, welding equipment, burning torches, jib cranes, man lifts, forklifts, scissor lifts, bearing and gear press, and bench vises.
4. Performs installations, repairs and maintenance on all utility distribution through out the facilities and on board the ships and barges.
5. Performs repairs to buildings, structures, production equipment and portable production support equipment in the facilities and on board ships and barges.
Physical/Mental Involvement
Lifting/carrying up to 100 lbs. assisted lift and up to 60 lbs. unassisted regularly; pushing/pulling, standing, reclining, walking, sitting, kneeling, climbing, balancing, stooping/crouching, bending, reaching, handling, fingering, seeingand hearing. Maintaining continuous safety awareness, reading street and highway signs, following maps, adhering to state motor vehicle laws, using visual, spatial and depth perception, reasoning and making judgments, disassembling and reassembling parts and machines according to manufactures specifications.
Marginal Job Tasks
Performs all work as described in Maintenance Mechanic job description. Also performs other work requiring additional skills in fabrication of parts from raw stock, such as; machining shafts to precision dimensions, machining bushings and other parts using precision lathers and other production equipment.
1. Specialized training (such as Tool & Die Maker) and or equivalent experience in precision machining using lathes and other precision machine shop type equipment.
2. Designs and or fabricates precision parts from raw stock using precision fabrication equipment.

Environmental Factors
Exposed to wind, wet and humid conditions when working outdoors or on board ship. Temperatures and ventilation may become uncomfortable. Exposed to fumes, odors, dust, gases and toxic chemicals. Works more than 50% of the time outside. Exposed to constantly moving machines and mechanical parts, vibration, loud noise. Must be able to work in varied whole body positions to perform needed repair work and work in confined areas with limited visibility.
PAY SCALE
$25.60 - $29.95
Hourly Roles
This pay range is a reasonable estimate of the hourly range for this role. It takes into account the wide range of factors considered in making compensation decisions; including but not limited to skill sets, experience, training, and education.
