SUMMARY

Performs inspections and other quality assurance functions required to substantiate conformance to shipbuilding and repair drawings, specifications, and contract requirements.  Conducts audit, surveillance, drafts reports, reviews technical documentation and performs other quality related administrative tasks in all phases and stages of ship construction and/or repair. Reports to Supervisor or Manager of Quality Assurance.  Maintains internal contacts with Purchasing, Warehousing, Safety, Production, and Engineering.  Outside contacts include equipment vendors, customers, regulatory agencies and SupShip/MSC/Navy personnel. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

  • Perform basic inspection of shipbuilding and ship repair work in accordance with established policies to ensure compliance with technical requirements
  • Ensure correct materials and proper fabrication and installation procedures are utilized during production processes
  • Evaluate results from tests and inspections to determine acceptability with assistance as needed
  • Basic understanding and ability to research technical documents including engineering drawings, specifications, standards, test procedures, work instructions, NAVSEA Standard Items, and contract requirements
  • Basic understanding of the usage of calibrated equipment and ability to  validate calibration of equipment, gauges, and tools used in production and inspection in accordance with established policies
  • Basic ability to recognize and document nonconformance’s per company policy
  • Basic understanding of root cause analysis, corrective action, and preventative action practices
  • Ability to learn and perform process audits and surveillances
  • Drafts, reviews, and/or submits QA reports and technical documents
  • Actively participates in implementing and monitoring continuous improvement initiatives to improve safety, improve quality, reduce cycle time, and reduce costs
  • Brings complex issues to the attention of Supervision
  • Performs other Quality Assurance tasks as assigned by supervisor/manager

 

 

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School education or equivalent; Additional technical education or college education a plus
  • Zero to four (0 – 4) years of Quality Assurance or related experience
  • Knowledge of shipbuilding and repair operations a plus
  • Ability to develop technical knowledge of ship construction and repair processes including welding, structural, machinery, electrical piping, ventilation, flushing and develop familiarity with various measuring instruments related to inspections. 
  • Computer literate; knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and IFS Quality Modules a plus
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, integrity, presentation skills, problem solving skills
  • Positive attitude and determination to help others required 
  • Able to learn to read and understand blueprints, standard/specifications, regulatory body requirements, and ship specifications
  • Must be a team player

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus.  Regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, operate computer keyboard and controls, and communicate verbally and in writing. 

Requires ability to commute physically to various areas of the shipyard including but not limited to shipboard activities. Must be capable of ascending/descending stairs or ladders, walking on uneven surfaces, and transiting through manholes and other confined, congested spaces. Physical dexterity must allow for bending and reaching. Must remain alert and comply with all safety requirements.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is exposed occasionally to dust, fumes, and smoke. Must be able to spend up to 80% of time in an outdoor shipyard environment in all climates. The noise level is relatively low to moderate in office environments.  The noise level in the outdoor shipyard production environment is moderate to noisy 70% of time which may include sirens, horns, chipping, and hammering.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY

Successful accomplishment of the assigned tasks will directly relate to NASSCOs ability to build ships in a cost effective manner, reducing rework and providing a quality product to the customer.

 

 

Pay Scale

$58,500 - $92,292

 

This pay range is a reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role. It takes into account the wide range of factors considered in making compensation decisions; including but not limited to skill sets, experience, training, and education.
