SUMMARY

 

This position will require designing and engineering of rigging and lifting shipyard assemblies, as well as, blocking plans for all steel structures up to and including grand blocks. Determine the center of gravity and develop a pad eye arrangement plan ensuring there is sufficient backup structure to safely lift the item. Must be flexible and willing to undertake duties as assigned by the lead rigging engineer for specific assignments, such as, support of launching, docking, inclining test, shafting installation, and repair projects. Will be informed of priorities and allowed to schedule work as necessary to complete required tasks within guidance provided by the Supervisor. Will perform design analysis and support calculations for various projects identified by yard wide process improvement initiatives, build strategy requirements, and rigging related items.    .                                            

 

Reports to the Senior Rigging Engineer.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

 

  • Possess math and problem solving skills to identify solutions. Ability to project manages a task to completion.
  • Required to contribute time and effort, as required, to ensure success in terms of meeting 
  • Schedules and be a technical adviser for the rigging department to internal and external customers.
  • Will report to the lead rigging engineer and interface with planners, engineers, other departmental personnel with rigging related issues.
  • Directly accountable for the planning the safe lifting, supporting, and movement of all blocks, grand blocks and other structures.
  • Familiarity with structural engineering software such as RISA-3D Mac Pac or similar software.
  • Knowledgeable with engineering tools such as AutoCAD and Tribon.
  • Must be able to perform under pressure to meet deadlines and handle multiple priorities.
  • Design ship mooring plans when required.
  • Be able to familiarize yourself with shipyard terminology and facilities equipment, such as cranes and transporters.
  • Must be a self-motivated, proactive individual with strong interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication skills able to write reports and give presentations.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel.

 

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering or Mechanical Engineering. E.I.T. certificate desirable.
  • Four to six (4 – 6) years experience in an engineering role with strong background in both mechanical and structural engineering. Four (4) years experience in job specific discipline.
  • Familiarity with structural steel design is required. Applicants with experience in the engineering of moving and/or lifting large objects in an industrial or construction environment or with the engineering of gear used to perform these lifts is a plus.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

 

Must be able to climb vertical ladders, and work at heights. Must be able to physically commute to various areas throughout the shipyard and aboard ships under construction or repair.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY

 

Directly accountable for planning the safe lifting, supporting, and movement of all blocks, grand blocks and other structures.  Responsible for reviewing all evolutions to determine opportunities for process improvements.

Pay Scale

$80,900 - $110,600

 

This pay range is a reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role. It takes into account the wide range of factors considered in making compensation decisions; including but not limited to skill sets, experience, training, and education.
