SUMMARY

Provides general and specialized safety related trainings as required by the production, contractors, unions and other workers demand. The Safety Training Specialist supports various specialized safety trainings, and administers assessments and evaluations to class participants to ensure knowledge is gained during the class. The person in this role will collaborate with other departments, and give input based on experience and knowledge to help maintain and grow the course material, as well as ensure that General Dynamics NASSCO maintains compliance with all applicable Federal, State, and local regulations.

 

Reports to the Supervisor of Safety.  Maintains internal contacts with Production, Repair, and Operations Training. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

  • Collaborates with relevant stakeholders to analyze learning needs and designs instruction that optimizes student learning outcomes.
  • Develops and facilitates safety courses to a broad range of audiences.
  • Updates and maintains training material IAW current regulatory requirements.
  • Creates training plans and schedules.
  • Administers tests and other methods to assess effectiveness of training. Utilizes training performance gaps to improve curriculum.
  • Designs and develops specialized courses to resolve unique safety situations.
  • Monitors, evaluates, and records training activities for program effectiveness.
  • Obtains, organizes, and develops training procedure manuals, guides, and course materials, such as handouts or visual materials.
  • Offers specific training programs to help workers maintain or improve safety knowledge and skills. 
  • Adapts teaching approach to match the experience and abilities of the participants
  • Organizes and directs activities of assigned students in order to provide a high level of quality instruction.
  • Must ensure that all necessary documents and materials are present in the classroom for use by the students.
  • Ensures that all students are registered and accounted on the class roster prior to beginning class.
  • Helps organize and assists in the development of special programs and activities.
  • Maintains flexibility in carrying out other duties to support the department.

 

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • OSHA Authorized Maritime Trainer
  • A minimum 3-5 years of facilitation or classroom instructor experience. Instructional Design experience a plus.
  • A minimum 3 years of experience in maritime environment.  Experience in shipbuilding and repair environments desirable
  • Must possess proven classroom presentation and facilitation skills, and effective written skills.
  • Must be able to obtain access to military bases.
  • Must possess knowledge in the following areas:
    • Applicable Federal and State OSHA regulations;
    • Techniques used to recognize health and safety hazards;
    • Working with hazardous materials;
    • Ship configuration;
    • Shipbuilding techniques and shipyard operations; 
    • Use of computer software programs (MS Office). (Advanced MS Office skills – specifically with Word and PowerPoint.)

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work occurs in both an outdoor shipyard environment and in an office setting. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus.  Regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, operate computer keyboard and controls, and communicate verbally and in writing. Requires ability to commute physically to various areas of the shipyard including but not limited to shipboard activities. Must be capable of ascending/descending stairs or ladders, walking on uneven surfaces, and transiting through manholes and other confined, congested spaces. Physical dexterity must allow for bending and reaching. Must be able to  lift up to 50 pounds of weight. Must remain alert and comply with all safety requirements. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is exposed occasionally to dust, fumes, and smoke. Must be able to spend up to 25% of time in an outdoor shipyard environment in all climates. The noise level is relatively low to moderate in office environments.  The noise level in the outdoor shipyard production environment is moderate to noisy 75% of time which may include sirens, horns, chipping, and hammering.

   

PAY SCALE 

$73,000 - $116,200

 

This pay range is a reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role. It takes into account the wide range of factors considered in making compensation decisions; including but not limited to skill sets, experience, training, and education.
