SUMMARY

Functions as a specialist for a specific technical discipline within detail design group. Acts as Team Leader and Mentor to other designers.  May be assigned cognizant Engineer responsibilities within the department.  A highly effective point of contact within specified discipline.  Reports to Supervisor or Manager. Assists Supervisor in planning, scheduling, and evaluating detail design effort. Interfaces with other Engineering groups, Production, Quality Assurance, Purchasing, Vendors, Regulatory Bodies and other disciplines as required.  Manages priorities and schedules work as necessary to complete required tasks. Works independently within performance guidelines established by Supervisor. May be assigned as Team Leader with responsibility for team of designers.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES 

  • Responsible for the effective analysis of problems in the area of specialization and the dissemination of the results to cognizant personnel in the detail design divisions.
  • Independently solves complex design problems within discipline.
  • Uses independent decision making abilities and can also lead trouble analysis teams in the resolution of technical problems.
  • Effectively applies contract and functional design products and regulations.
  • Responsible for maintaining expertise at “State of the Art” level.
  • Performs duties as team leader for specific assignments.
  • Represents GD NASSCO on official business as directed.
  • Makes presentations.
  • Assumes additional responsibilities or performs varying work as work situations dictate.
  • Provides training and mentoring to design staff.
  • Other responsibilities and duties as assigned.

 

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two (2) years Associates Degree (or equivalent).
  • Eleven (11) years experience in detail design of ship structures or outfit systems or BS degree plus 7 years.
  • Demonstrated expertise within discipline, with specialize knowledge of process within discipline.
  • Frequently takes on responsibility for special projects.
  • Develops build strategy and producibility concepts.
  • Strong knowledge of PC and CAD applications.
  • Possesses cognizant Engineer skills.  Exhibits knowledge of cost/schedule management techniques.
  • Understands production process by contributing to Build Strategy and producibility concepts and incorporating them into the design.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The essential functions of this role require work in both an office and industrial setting. The role requires prolonged periods of working in a stationary position, operating a computer, computer programs, and standard office equipment necessary to perform the essential duties. The role requires perceiving information and communicating effectively with others in person, online, and on the phone. The role also requires prolonged periods of working in indoor and outdoor industrial settings.  Must have the ability to safely access, navigate, and traverse the shipyard, construction areas, production areas, ships, and warehouses. Must be able to transit uneven surfaces, and be agile to move quickly to avoid hazards and respond to unexpected obstacles. Must be able to observe, detect, identify, perceive, recognize, and process information to remain alert and timely comply with all safety requirements. Must be able to move, transport, and use equipment necessary to perform the essential duties. Duties performed on ships require ascending and descending stairs and ladders, transiting on scaffolding and at heights, transiting through manholes and other narrow, confined, or congested spaces. This position requires exposure to industrial areas which contain hazardous materials, loud noise (including sirens, horns, chipping, slamming, and hammering), dust, fumes, and exposure to weather

 

ACCOUNTABILITY

Completes assigned tasks within cost and schedule commitments with the highest quality output. Provides problem resolution in the most time effective manner. When in team lead role, accountable for performance of individual team members. Develops highly effective designs and work products.

 

PAY SCALE

$89,000 - $150,200

This pay range is a reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role. It takes into account the wide range of factors considered in making compensation decisions; including but not limited to skill sets, experience, training, and education.
