SUMMARY

Directs Area Managers, Process Lane Managers and their work teams to perform quality work on schedule and within budget. 

 

Reports to Director of Production or the Manager of Production, Repair.  Liaison with Trade Superintendents for resources and technical guidance. Close liaison with Q.A., Planning, Program Management, OPC, Materials & Warehousing, Test personnel, and subcontractors. Appraises senior management of project status. Interfaces with customers and regulatory bodies.  Interfaces with erection management and all suppliers i.e., plate shop, pipe shop, sheetmetal shop.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

  • Oversees activities to strategize and develop all block/ship schedules to achieve efficient performance by all trades and subcontractors. Chairs structured meetings scheduled with staff to disseminate information and direction.
  • Manages supervisors assigned to project.
  • Joint responsibility with Trade Superintendents for trade performance to meet GD NASSCO, schedule and cost objectives.  Develops manpower requirements with Trade Superintendents or designee to support SOC.
  • Makes sure Ground Outfitting Area/Ship is safe and clean at all times.
  • Assists Area Managers, Process Lane Managers, and trade supervision in problem resolution.  Provides appropriate feedback (lessons learned, ECN's, etc.) to earlier/or other Stage Managers, Superintendents, Planning, and OPC.
  • Ensures housekeeping and material control procedures are supported.  Works with trades to improve productivity and methodology.  Analyzes and reports on cost account variances that exceed the threshold, positive or negative.
  • Coordinates performance evaluations with trade Superintendents.
  • Performs all job duties in accordance with NASSCO’s Mission, Vision, Values and Principles.  Enforces GD NASSCO’s safety, environmental, and emergency procedures.
  • Other responsibilities and duties as assigned.

 

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • College degree preferred.
  • Fifteen (15) years proven shipbuilding experience in supervisory role.  Experience as Area Manager, Process Lane Manager, General Supervisor or equivalent desired.
  • Good knowledge of shipbuilding and repair.  Good knowledge of NASSCO’s policies and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of contract and estimating procedures.
  • Good team-building skills.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.

 

     PHYSICAL DEMANDS

     While performing the duties of the job, the employee must be able to walk, climb ladders, and crawl from various Blocks and/or shipboard locales to monitor job progress. Must be physically able to commute extensively throughout shipyard to monitor progress of shop work. Must be able to work extended hours, including weekends and holidays, as job accomplishments require.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to dust, welding/burning fumes, and smoke.  The noise level is usually moderate to extremely noisy, which may include sirens, horns, chipping, and hammering.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY

Directly responsible for the efficient operation of the shipbuilding processes including cost, schedule, safety, and quality.

The Performance of the Ship Manager is primarily measured by the success of the managed availabilities and delivery of the ship; this is measured in terms of schedule and budget compliance, as well as government compliance.
