JOB SUMMARY

Performs a variety of tasks required in the new construction and repair of ships with initiative and adaptability and little supervision.  Perform journeyman quality in the following areas: shipfitting, burning, plate welding (certified), chipping, and structural layout. Performs other related tasks as assigned, some of which may become essential to the position.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS

Previous experience or training is required.  Must be qualified or certified to perform Journeyman quality in the following areas: shipfitting, burning, plate welding, chipping, and structural layout. Must have knowledge in trigonometry, product design, metal properties, and shop machinery. Must have the ability to do precision work when necessary.  Must have the ability to lift heavy materials and equipment.  Must have the ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and be able to work any shift. Must be able to understand written and verbal instructions, hear warning signals, and read and comprehend safety instructions, regulations and warnings.

ESSENTIAL JOB TASKS

1.    Weld metal parts together as specified.
2.    Cut, grind, and groove metal.
3.    Trim and scarf metal to dimension, contour, or level as specified.
4.    Fabricate metal structural parts, align, and fasten parts into position.
5.    Other tasks may be assigned relevant to the trade

MATERIALS, TOOLS EQUIPMENT, WORK AIDS

Tool bags, core wire suitcases, welding leads, air hoses, needle guns, grinders, stingers, welding rods (6-15 lbs.), ventilation systems, chipper hammers, and sky climbers. Personal protective equipment is required.

 


PHYSICAL/MENTAL INVOLVEMENT

Works in all areas of the shipyard and on board ships requiring repetitive or prolonged bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, and climbing.  Must be able to regularly lift/carry between 50 and 75 lbs. unassisted. Must be able to work in full bodied positions. Must be able to maintain general safety awareness by hearing warning signals, reading and comprehending safety instructions, and avoid hazards commonly present in an employee’s work area.

MARGINAL JOB TASKS

Performs housekeeping, including sweeping, in all work areas. Attend safety, quality, and/or process improvement meetings as required. 

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

Exposure to fumes, odors, dust, gases, various climates and temperatures, and low ventilation conditions, all of which may cause discomfort and/or respiratory difficulties. Exposure to constantly moving machines and mechanical parts and high levels of constant noise. 

 

 

PAY SCALE

$34.71 - $36.06

 

 

Hourly Roles

This pay range is a reasonable estimate of the hourly range for this role. It takes into account the wide range of factors considered in making compensation decisions; including but not limited to skill sets, experience, training, and education.
