SUMMARY

NASSCO’s summer engineering internship program offers an exciting opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in the marine engineering industry. We are seeking a skilled and motivated Electrical Engineering Intern to join our marine engineering team, with a focus on designing and integrating shipboard electrical systems. This role will provide exposure to real-world projects, including power generation and distribution, control systems, navigation electronics, and communication networks within maritime environments. Interns will work closely with experienced engineers to develop detailed electrical system diagrams, perform system analyses, and ensure compliance with maritime standards (ABS, IEEE, IEC). This internship is ideal for driven students looking to apply their academic knowledge in a collaborative, professional setting.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

As an Electrical Engineering Intern, your responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting senior engineers in the design and integration of shipboard electrical systems.
  • Developing and modifying CAD drawings and detailed electrical system diagrams to support ship design projects.
  • Conducting system analysis to ensure reliability, efficiency, and compliance with maritime standards (ABS, IEEE, IEC).
  • Participating in shipboard inspections and testing alongside senior naval architects and engineers.
  • Researching technical solutions using online and printed resources to contribute to design recommendations.
  • Collaborating with cross-disciplinary teams to deliver innovative and practical engineering solutions.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Successful candidates will meet the following requirements:

  • Currently enrolled as a full-time student in an accredited Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or a related field (junior or senior level standing preferred).
  • Knowledge of, or coursework in, power generation and distribution, control systems, navigation electronics, and communication networks is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) and simulation tools is essential; experience with CAD/CAE software is preferred.
  • Interest or prior experience in ship design, shipbuilding, construction management, or manufacturing processes is advantageous.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to convey ideas effectively in both oral and written formats.
  • Willingness to work in a dynamic, team-oriented environment and adapt to changing project requirements.

WHY JOIN NASSCO?
This internship provides a unique opportunity to work on large-scale marine engineering projects with one of the leading companies in shipbuilding. You will gain valuable experience designing and analyzing shipboard systems while working directly with seasoned engineers in the field. NASSCO offers a collaborative and supportive work environment where interns can develop technical skills, build professional connections, and make meaningful contributions to critical projects.
