Student Intern - Environmental Engineering (Part-Time)

SUMMARY

 

Intern will work with the Environmental Engineering Department to support shipyard environmental compliance and education programs.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

 

As an intern at General Dynamics NASSCO, you will be responsible for assisting environmental engineers with their current projects and assignments in support of shipyard environmental management activities. Duties may include:

  • Assisting with inspections, audits, sampling, and recordkeeping required by environmental regulations and permits
  • Generating environmental reports, presentations, procedures, or training materials
  • Researching environmental requirements, regulations, and best practices
  • Entry, analysis, and validation of data or records
  • Supporting formal and informal environmental training programs for our employees and contractors
  • Assisting with various projects and sustainability efforts to improve environmental performance

 

Reports to department manager/supervisor on a regular basis to monitor status of assigned projects. Interacts with General Supervisors, Trade Supervisors, Ship Managers, Engineers, customers, vendors and subcontractors.

 

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Enrollment in an accredited college or university pursuing a degree in environmental engineering, environmental science, or a related field is preferred
  • General understanding of waste management, recycling methods, air pollution prevention systems, or wastewater  treatment processes used in an industrial setting is desired but not required
  • Proficiency in personal computer (PC) word processing and spreadsheets applications
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written formats, to demonstrate a high degree of personal flexibility, and ability to consistently meet deadlines.

 

POSITION DEMANDS

 

  • Must be able to climb ladders and work in on-board shop and assembly production areas.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  The employee is regularly required to sit, use hands to fingers, handle or feel objects, controls, and to talk and hear.  Must be physically able to walk to all yard locations. The noise level in this environment is usually moderate.
