Job Summary

Performs tests in accordance with ABS or Navy specifications to the hull, service tanks, wet spaces, and deckhouses to insure structural strength and tightness. Applies test procedures for each of those areas. Performs skills inherent to Tank Testers: 009-24 process and procedures; 009-25 process and procedures; 009-89 process and procedures; cathodic protection requirements; understand and identify minor weld repairs. Performs other related tasks as assigned, some of which may become essential to the position.

 

Qualifications Standards

Must have knowledge of a ship’s arrangement.  Must have the ability to maintain and organize records.  Must be capable of good working relations with all team members and departments. Must establish credibility with customer and regulatory bodies. Must have the ability to conduct JSA approved work. Must have the ability to obtain DBIDS pass. Must have the ability to follow the ESTC process. Must have the ability to work with various hand and power tools (electrical/pneumatic). If qualified must be able to use welding and burning equipment (009-25), air test equipment tools, impact guns, huck bolting tools, hoses, fittings, magnetic drill press, isolation piping aids, operate high reaching equipment, and use multi-meter zinc resistance testing tools. Must be able to contribute to the PII program. Must be able to follow NASSCO’s safety policies and procedures. Must have the ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and be able to work any shift. Must be able to understand written and verbal instructions, hear warning signals, and read and comprehend safety instructions, regulations, and warnings.

 

 

Essential Job Tasks

 

  1. Perform vacuum test for tightness, local hose test (air and water) for tightness, and pressurized air tests for tightness
  2. Anode resistance and torque testing for zincs, zinc removal and installation, stud welding, and hot work-fire watch requirements.
  3. Other tasks may be assigned relevant to the trade.

 

Materials, Tools, Equipment, Work Aids

Various hand and power tools (electrical/pneumatic). Welding and burning equipment (009-25), air test equipment tools, impact guns, huck bolting tools, hoses, fittings, magnetic drill press, isolation piping aids, high reach equipment, and multi-meter zinc resistance testing tools. Personal protective equipment required.

 

 

Physical/Mental Involvement

Works in all areas of the shipyard requiring repetitive or prolonged bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, and climbing.  Must be able to regularly lift/carry up to 50 and 75 pounds unassisted.  Must be able to work in full bodied positions. Must have colored vision and good eye/hand/foot coordination. Must be able to maintain general safety awareness by hearing warning signals, reading and comprehending safety instructions, and avoid hazards commonly present in an employee’s work area.

 

 

Marginal Job Tasks

Perform housekeeping, including sweeping, in all work areas. Attend safety, quality and/or process improvement meetings as required.

 

 

Environmental Factors

Exposure to fumes, odors, dust, gases, various climates and temperatures, and low ventilation conditions, all of which may cause discomfort and/or respiratory difficulties. Exposure to constantly moving machines and mechanical parts and high levels of constant noise.

Payscale: $31.30 - $32.65

 

This pay range is a reasonable estimate of the hourly range for this role. It takes into account the wide range of factors considered in making compensation decisions; including but not limited to skill sets, experience, training, and education.
