SUMMARY
Technical Training Specialists assess performance gaps to determine training needs and recommend targeted solutions. They develop effective training programs by selecting appropriate learning methods and creating materials with computer-based authoring tools and Microsoft Office applications. Specialists deliver instructor-led sessions, manage training schedules, and ensure resources are available. They also track and report the success of training initiatives, collaborate with instructional designers and other trainers on program development, and provide support across NASSCO as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES
- Conducts training needs analyses and develops tailored training strategies or alternative solutions to address identified objectives, collaborating with subject-matter experts when necessary.
- Designs and prepares course objectives, outlines, lesson plans, handouts, and other instructional materials with precision.
- Creates and implements computer-based training modules and knowledge assessments.
- Utilizes the learning management system (LMS) to perform tasks such as course creation, program development, assessment setup, and tracking training completions.
- Contributes to the design and management of training programs to enhance their overall effectiveness.
- Leads and facilitates training classes to ensure effective transfer of knowledge and skills to the workplace.
- Manages progression course scheduling and tracking of completions ensuring to maintain optimal student to instructor ratios.
- Updates course materials as needed to align with changes in production processes, safety standards, quality requirements, or progression courses.
- Tracks course attendance and collects feedback, generating reports to evaluate training impact and effectiveness.
- Conducts workplace surveys to assess the performance of new employees and assists in resolving performance-related challenges.
- Interfaces with other members of the department to ensure comprehensive and timely responses to training issues.
- Coordinates training activities with supervisors, including establishing schedules and monitoring student progress to meet course deadlines.
- Analyzes business initiatives to recommend appropriate training interventions that support organizational objectives.
- Partners with business units, vendors, and consultants to source and develop materials for training programs.
- Engages with business units to stay informed about product changes or updates, ensuring these are integrated into training programs.
- Maintains open communication across the organization to facilitate the timely exchange of information needed to keep training content relevant.
- Performs additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of two years of experience in instructor-led facilitation.
- Experience in trade mentoring or supervisory roles is desirable.
- An associate degree or relevant certifications in training and adult education are preferred.
- Skilled in designing training programs grounded in effective instructional design methodologies.
- Proficient in project management, with the ability to oversee and execute multiple initiatives
- Experienced in developing computer-based training modules and assessments.
- Proficient in utilizing Microsoft Office software to develop training materials, analyze data, and create professional presentations.
- Demonstrates excellent presentation skills, with the capability to deliver course material effectively to diverse organizational levels.
- May provide leadership or guidance to other team members within the department.
- Serves as an internal expert on training and development issues in collaboration with the Employee Relations department, visiting departments periodically to foster understanding and collaboration.
- Ensures training equipment is functional and that facilities are maintained in a clean and professional condition.
- Identifies opportunities and implements strategies to drive continuous process improvement.
- Handles a variety of complex tasks related to areas of expertise with proficiency.
- Cross-trains to teach other training courses on an as needed basis.
- Exhibits strong attention to detail to ensure the accuracy and quality of training deliverables.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The essential functions of this role require work in both an office and industrial setting. The role requires prolonged periods of working in a stationary position, operating a computer, computer programs, and standard office equipment necessary to perform the essential duties. The role requires perceiving information and communicating effectively with others in person, online, and on the phone. The role also requires prolonged periods of working in indoor and outdoor industrial settings. Must have the ability to safely access, navigate, and traverse the shipyard, construction areas, production areas, ships, and warehouses. Must be able to transit uneven surfaces and be agile to move quickly to avoid hazards and respond to unexpected obstacles. Must be able to observe, detect, identify, perceive, recognize, and process information to remain alert and timely comply with all safety requirements. Must be able to move, transport, and use equipment necessary to perform the essential duties. Duties performed on ships require ascending and descending stairs and ladders, transiting on scaffolding and at heights, transiting through manholes and other narrow, confined, or congested spaces. This position requires exposure to industrial areas which contain hazardous materials, loud noise (including sirens, horns, chipping, slamming, and hammering), dust, fumes, and exposure to weather.
PAY SCALE
$78,200 - $101,200
This pay range is a reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role. It takes into account the wide range of factors considered in making compensation decisions; including but not limited to skill sets, experience, training, and education.
