Job Summary


Inspects and performs mechanical repairs and maintenance to yard facilities and equipment.  Conducts chipping, painting, routine inspections, mechanical maintenance, electrical maintenance, welding, burning, grinding, small boat operations, and scuba diving. Supports all ship movements for the shipyard including diving operations for dockings and launches. Works in all areas of the shipyard including barges, piers, tug boats, oil boom, floating dry dock, graving dock, and sliding ways.  Performs other related tasks as assigned, some of which may become essential to the position.


Qualification Standards


High school diploma or GED Certificate required. Basic Scuba, preferred. Must be CFR/First Aid certified or be able to pass within the first 30 days of employment. Must be able to pass T1 Welding School within the first 90 days of employment.  Burning, welding, craftsmanship and mechanical skills preferred. Must have a valid Driver’s License.  Must comprehend verbal and written job instructions and communicate effectively with others. Must be able to recognize and avoid potential hazards commonly present in the employee's work area, have the ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, in all areas of the shipyard, and must be available to work any shift.    Must also hear, read and comprehend warning signals and safety instructions.



Essential Job Tasks


  1. Inspect equipment to ensure safe and reliable operations.
  2. Perform equipment service and repairs using pumps, hand tools, pneumatic tools and other power tools.
  3. Perform underwater inspections and repairs on SCUBA or Surface Supplied Air; repairs include cutting, burning, grinding, and fabricating metal structures.
  4. Perform repairs to buildings, structures, production equipment and portable production support equipment in the facilities and onboard ships and barges.
  5. Operate aerial equipment including condor, scissor lifts, overhead cranes, forklifts, trucks and boats.
  6. Complete reports and documents such as, work orders, inspection forms, discrepancy sheets, log books, and service forms.
  7. Other tasks as may be assigned relevant to the trade.

Materials, Tools Equipment, Work Aids


Dive gear SCUBA bottles, buoyancy control devices, AGA masks, band mask, various valves and gauges as needed for safe diving operations. Hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, hand and table saws, bench grinders, files, polishers, port-a-powers, hand trucks, lifts, chain falls, welding equipment, burning torches, jib cranes, man lifts, forklifts, scissor lifts, and bench vises. Task specific personal protective equipment required.


Physical/Mental Involvement


Frequent lifting up to 60lbs. unassisted and lifting/carrying up to 100 lbs. assisted. Frequent standing, walking, sitting, swimming, kneeling, and climbing, balancing, stooping/crouching, pushing/pulling, bending, handling, reaching, seeing, and hearing.  Tasks will require using visual, spatial and depth perception, reasoning and making judgments.  Works in varied whole body positions and in confined spaces with limited visibility. Works in all areas of the shipyard and on board ships. Hearing warning signals, reading, and comprehending safety instructions required. Must be able to maintain general safety awareness and avoid hazards commonly present in the employee’s work area.


Marginal Job Tasks


Housekeeping in all work areas, including sweeping.  May be required to attend safety, quality and/or process improvement meetings.


Environmental Factors


Exposure to underwater diving conditions including but not limited to extreme cold, zero visibility, confined space diving, and diving without free ascent. Exposed to extreme temperatures, wind, wet and/or humid conditions when working outdoors or onboard ship.  Exposure to fumes, odors, dust, gases, toxic chemicals, confined spaces, and low ventilation conditions, all of which can cause discomfort and/or respiratory difficulties.  Exposure to constantly moving machines and mechanical parts and high levels of constant noise
