SUMMARY
Plans, create, and develop welding techniques, procedures, instructions and sequences. Production support for all quality and cost improvement initiatives. Controls all welding procedure and performance qualifications. Reports to the position of the Senior Welding Engineer/Chief Weld Engineer/Manager of Welding Engineer. Maintains internal contact with fitting and Welding Production areas and Engineering. External contacts maintained with vendors, subcontractors, owner representatives, regulatory agencies and classification societies.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Position requires the following qualifications:
- A Bachelor of Science Degree in Welding Engineering, or Metallurgy, preferably in Manufacturing, Production Engineering or another engineering discipline, plus technical or on-the-job training in welding, metallurgy, testing procedures and production methods.
- Knowledge of various types of welding processes, equipment, filler materials, blueprint reading, and NDT methods. Skill in supervision is necessary.
- Working knowledge of welding metallurgy and welding design and weld ability of various materials.
- Working knowledge of military standards for shipbuilding and commercial welding specifications and codes
- Capable of becoming a certified welding inspector.
- Two plus years’ experience in a related manufacturing engineering discipline.
- Demonstrated task management skills with a record of successfully performing assigned tasks to scheduled milestones.
- Good verbal and written communication skills and able to work under minimum supervision
- Practical experience as a welder or welding operator and capable of providing instruction and conducting training in welding theory and application.
- Continuous upgrade in education and skills to ensure company’s competitiveness in welding.
- Basic computer skills in Microsoft word, Excel and power point.
- Actively promotes implementing and monitoring continuous improvement initiatives to improve safety, improve quality, reduce cycle time, and reduce costs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES
- Inspects Fabrication, Assembly and Erection areas checking for utilization of proper welding procedures, joint designs, and correct fit up. Develops work instructions and procedures for process improvements. Conducts training of various personnel
- Implements quality control procedures and monitors production to ensure compliance with code requirements
- Tracks NDT performance to evaluate quality and implements corrective action
- Maintains liaison with owner representatives, Classification Societies, and Military agencies in order to resolve welding and fabrication issues. Reviews and provides specification interpretation
- Evaluates the capabilities and utilization of new equipment and welding materials and coordinates successful implementation in production.
- Develops welding techniques and qualifies weld procedures for specific applications. Controls all testing for PQR Procedure Qualification Record and writes WPS Welding Procedure Specifications.
- Supervises two or more workers and has the authority to make effective recommendations or decisions about hiring and firing.
- Exercise discretion and independent Judgment for budgets.
- Perform and / or coordinate Data Management activities required to establish and maintain welding / brazing procedure and performance qualifications.
- Plan, Schedule and coordinate projects to complete on schedule with project status reports and final reports.
- Other responsibilities and duties as required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work occurs in both an outdoor shipyard environment and in an office setting. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus. Regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, operate computer keyboard and controls, and communicate verbally and in writing. Requires ability to commute physically to various areas of the shipyard including but not limited to shipboard activities. Must be capable of ascending/descending stairs or ladders, walking on uneven surfaces, and transiting through manholes and other confined, congested spaces. Physical dexterity must allow for bending and reaching. Must remain alert and comply with all safety requirements. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is exposed occasionally to dust, fumes, and smoke. Must be able to spend up to 50% of time in an outdoor shipyard environment in all climates. The noise level is relatively low to moderate in office environments. The noise level in the outdoor shipyard production environment is moderate to noisy 70% of time, which may include sirens, horns, chipping, and hammering.
Additional requirements: Position requires the ability to walk on scaffolding and work at heights aboard vessels under construction or repair and carry raise, lower, push or pull objects up to 50 lbs.
ACCOUNTABILITY
Responsible for ensuring that fabrication and welding is accomplished in accordance with contract and regulatory agency specifications. Assure that qualified welding/brazing procedures, specifications, techniques and instructions are available to trained and qualified personnel, in order to perform work capable of meeting or exceeding contractually specified workmanship requirements.
PAYSCALE:
Assistant Welding Engineer: $65,600 - $84,900
Welding Engineer: $76,400 - $106,600
Senior Welding Engineer: $98,900 - $128,000
This pay range is a reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role. It takes into account the wide range of factors considered in making compensation decisions; including but not limited to skill sets, experience, training, and education.
